Constant Burning For Over A Year Now...

Im new to this community and i need so advice please...

For over a year now I’ve had this constant burning sensation down there. I only have this burning on my labia more of my left side. This started after I stopped taking my birth control back in February last year. At first the pain started from my clitoris to the opening of my vagina. Everything felt inflamed and burned like crazy. Now it’s only at the opening of my vagina. I’ve been to at least three different doctors and have been tested for yeast, bacterial vaginitis, group strep b and all stds. But last month I came back positive with bv. I think it’s from putting so much ointment and cream down there it upset the flora of my vagina. Well I took the antibiotics that were given and i still had symptoms after. I went back to the drs two weeks later and everything came back fine. Well I told my doctor that I still have redness around the opening of my vagina. It doesn’t hurt when touched it’s just a constant burning sensation. I feel like sometimes I feel like someone lit a match down there. Sex doesn’t hurt for me and I can insert a tampon just fine. When I go pee it hurts when I wipe. When I get out of this shower it burns like crazy too. I brought up to my doctor about possibly having vulvodynia. They just shrug it off and keep testing me for yeast and bv. I brought up a biopsy of my labia. One of the doctors was going to do it but didn’t. So my question I guess does this sound like vulvodynia? Redness and burning sensation only where the redness is? Please help I’ve been dealing with this for way too long now.

I had this it's horrendous. The worst part is not knowing what's wrong.

Do you have any co-occurring illnesses? How are your periods? I ask this because I was shrugged off with mysterious vulvodynia for over a year before I demanded some scans. Surprise surprise an MRI showed suspected endometriosis lesions. One of which is rather large and positioned on my vaginal wall between my vagina and bladder. It is pressing on my pelvic nerves as well as creating general inflammation all over the area - the vulvodynia isn't so mysterious anymore. The only thing is no doctor or gynaecologist put two and two together (collapsing when on period, heavy bleeding, debilitating cramps, the fact that initially the burning was only during ovulation and before my period). I was the one who connected the dots.

If you do have any other symptoms, regardless of where they are, ask for scans before a biopsy. They're far less invasive and rule out a lot. They may show nothing but at least you've covered all bases.

Amitriptyline has stopped my burning (although sex is still painful because it pulls the endometriosis lesion), so there is treatment. Push to see someone who understands these kinds of problems, get referred to the gynaecology unit, often treatment options are not solely for this so it takes an experienced professional to know which to use.

Thank you for your reply. In October I got and ultra sound done and trans ago am ultrasound done. Everything came back fine. The nurse called and said everything looked normal. But the radiologist said she saw two ovarian cyst on my left ovary. When I was younger I had them but then went away. My doctor put me back on birth control and she didn’t say anything after that. My periods are fine and they’re normal now. I don’t have any heavy bleeding or horrible cramping. But from June-September of last year I would get my period then two weeks later I would get another one. I think my periods were more of my hormones being out of wack. I have a doctors appointment Monday so I’m hoping what they can do for me. It’s just so hard because I know something is wrong but I feel like doctors aren’t taking me seriously. I’ve seen at least five different doctors now.

I will definitely ask for a biopsy when I go to the doctors. It just sucks that I’ve been having this for over a year with no answers.

Hi, I have and am going through the exact thing, kept changing soap at first thinking it was that., swimming pool etc. then itching came too., all infection s cleared still suffering. Now estrogen cream , sometimes steroid cream but continues , maybe due to cream IDK, told water only washes, and back to dr again in few weeks dr didn't do biopsy cause too inflamed,Im tired and feel like stopping everything, been using vaseline now outside. Hope you find the right help too, and will keep reading on these threads, alot of caring advice. This came after my Hysterectomy, before never a problem

I’ve tried estrogen cream too. Didn’t do much help the redness was still there and burning. I used it everyday for a week and saw no improvement so I discontinued it. I did the same as you did too. Changed soaps, shampoos and detergents. That didnt help unfortunately. I’m in my late 20’s and I never had children yet. Itching is a symptom of mine too but more so burning. The burning is worse when I wake up in the morning to use the bathroom and if I walk too much during the day. Sometimes I get sore down there. It feels like bruising. I hope everything works out for you and they can figure out your problems soon.

I've been having the same issue for almost 2 years now, been tested for everything and everything comes back negative initially when i went in the said I had BV the dr prescribed cream i used it the first night and broke out in hives all over my thighs and it was horrible the nurse told me to discontinue and to come back in for testing and everything was negative. I've been to several doctors since then, numerous urgent care visit and everyone telling me there is nothing wrong still but clearly something is because this is not normal for me. I only use baking soda to wash my clothes in, I use dr bronners Unscented to wash in and I have switched to reusable pads. Because I diagnosed myself with having vulvodynia i changed the foods i eat that are high in oxalates and I have seen some improvement. I wear loose fitting pants and change into a big night shirt when i get home from work. I also notice when i try to wear jeans thats when the burning is the worst. It's like friction irritates me and as long its nothing is rubbing up against me I'm fine. All my symptoms started around the same time I had other issues with tongue numbness etc. which I later found out was food allergies so I don't know if there is any connection there. I went to all kinds of specialist for that as well and everyone told me nothing was wrong but clearly it was I finally made myself an appt to see a allergist which is how I found out about the food allergies the list is so long that i need to see a nutritionist because i don't even know what to eat and because i still tend to eat some of the things i have allergies to ( the ones where the reaction is not so bad but enough to notice) I'm wondering if thats why I'm still having some burning still. I did cut back and I have to say that in the last 4 weeks I've been free from burning although my clitoris burns slightly sometimes it could be from wearing underwear because I don't feel comfortable not wearing any to work. My allergies are not limited to food either I cant even use toothpaste i have to use baking soda and I can barely take medicine because things like RED40 and Blue6 i guess additives and things also affects me so basically anything thats not natural and has preservatives so you can imagine what my life has been like and no one to help me know whats going on. I talked to a homeopathic dr and she said when you are nearing the age of 40 your hormones start to change to get ready for menopause so your body will start rejecting things and you will experience things you never did before so this could be the cause she told me to stick with organic food and try to elimination diet thing and then try reintroducing the foods back one by one also to try acupuncture and massages to help with the pain because alot of it might stem from stress. Anyway, i feel like I'm rambling on but I hope this helps you and others out there.

hello LittleOne9! please let me know when you see this reply -your symptoms are exactly like mine (burning not itching, fine with sex and tampons) and currently being investigated (4 months and counting). Have you got to the bottom of it? I don't burn until i walk for 15minutes or more which is every day. Annoying but I think I'll just have to accept it as long as I know my health isn't in danger.... Mine don't itch but burns and gets red in the evening. Tested for a lot of things, stopped using shower gel, white cotton pants- all the usual suspects have been eliminated... Three different doctors looked at my vulva skin and they all said there's absolutely no changes and reluctant to do a biopsy. All the best!
