Constant burning in throat and severe nausea-- miserable!

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar to this. I’m 20 years old and have suffered from nausea and burning in my throat for several years now. I have seen two GI doctors who have tried a few different PPIs and have tested me for many things, but I continue to get worse. Currently I am diagnosed with GERD and Fructose Malabsorption. PPIs seem to help with “regular” heartburn which I would get after eating a meal, but the burning in my throat is something different. It comes out of nowhere, usually two or three hours after I have eaten something or when I wake up in the morning. It will last for 2-3 days (sometimes more) straight with severe nausea, bloating, and gas. During these spells I can barely eat anything and medicines like Gaviscon, Zantac, and Pepto don’t even touch it. Then, I will wake up the next day after having a spell and the burning will be gone, but I am left with a queasy/nauseous feeling most of the time. I have drastically changed my diet and don’t eat or drink anything acidic or irritating. I don’t have coffee, chocolate, sauces, fried foods, etc. I also don’t smoke and I am pretty underweight. Does anyone have any ideas or tips? I am so desperate for relief that I am willing to try anything.

Just make sure no one convinces you to have Nissen Fundoplication as this surgery should be banned. Try the Mayo clinic as they have come up with a device called the LINX to help patients with GERD.

Thank you. Have you been to the Mayo Clinic? That will be my next step if I am able to.

It could be caused by a post-nasal drip coming from your sinuses. Stomach acid can inflame the sinuses and cause mucus to drip into the throat and esophagus when lying down. Eat small meals and try not to let your stomach remain empty for too long in between meals. Also ask your Gp about Gastritis.

Thanks! Hmm, I hadn't thought about that. I do have a runny nose a lot, but I always attribute it to allergies. Have you seen an ENT doctor? I might try seeing one. My GP is no help, unfortunately. She told me to take Tums (like I hadn't thought of that already!)

I have severe heartburn and my throat burns like crazy. I can actually feel the acid washing up through my esophagus. The burning gets so bad I can barely breathe. I get nauseous also but when that happens I take Gravol which is dimeahydrate in some countries.

I have a hiatal hernia which could be part of my acid reflux but I think I'm going to need an endoscopy to see what's going on with my esophagus. I take a PPI specifically Pantaloc and I take Gaviscon neither of which do anything to help. Do you get the heartburn often? Mine is now every other day and I'm concerned that it could be Barrett's Esophagus or worse.

Ugh, it's awful. Yes, I get heartburn now everyday. Nothing I take seems to help too. Definitely get an endoscopy if you can. I had one and it just showed gastritis.

I'm so fed up with it. Before it was usually because of things I may have eaten but now it doesn't matter anymore. I get it even if I don't eat. Yes I've had 2 endoscopies in the past. At the time they were all clear. Dr. even said my ulcer surgery 5 years prior had healed nicely. Seems there is definetly something going on now though.

How long ago was your last endoscopy?

I know how you feel. You'd think not eating would help, but it usually doesn't. Mine was a little over a year ago. My symptoms have steadily gotten worse since then 😦

Darn, sorry to hear that. It does seem like an uphill battle that's for sure. Doctors seem to want to avoid the subject of Gerd, Acid Reflux and Heartburn🤔
