Constant Kidney Pain

I had my first stones about a year and a half ago, the worst pain I have ever felt in my life!! Since then on every vist to my doctor I have had blood in my urine, I did the 24 hour urine and it showed uric acid crystals. According to my doctor I am a "flourisher" of cystals enough to make me always have blood in my urine. This last week I have had constant Kidney pain, I thought I had an infection. I went to doctor today and my urine showed no blood at all?? I am confused, he thinks I have a stone blocking something and it is blocking the blood coming out, I am not sure how that works but he is sending me for a CT scan this weekend. Any thoughts?

If there is a stone blocking the flow of blood then it would block the flow of urine from at least one of your kidneys and I imagine that this would be an emergency situation.
Crystals/stones are going to irritate your urinary tract and it seems that they are responsible for the blood being detected. Maybe the irritation is not quite so acute at the moment and not enough to cause bleeding?? Or, the stone is in a location where it is not causing you too much trouble. It will cause trouble if it starts to move down the narrow tubes again though.
See what the CT scan brings and ask your doctor to explain what he means, and how you can prevent recurrence. Depending on the exact composition of the stones, there are some dietary changes that you can make but you need to know what the stone is made from before you change what you eat and drink.
Let us know how you get on.

So, if one kidney's output tube is blocked, what's to stop it continuing to filter blood and trying to direct the waste fluid into the blocked tube? This is where the pain can kick in and in some cases, there can be kidney damage. Severe pain from a blocked kidney is an emergency situation so don't ignore it.
If you are getting pain on your left side then chances are the stone is affecting the left tube from the kidney to the bladder.
Your right side kidney will continue to work normally.
The body tries to push the blocking stone along the tube and this is also a source of great pain. If fluid can still pass by the obstruction, it isn't an emergency but that's no consolation when you're in severe pain. This is why they seem happy to give you painkillers and hope that the stone will pass on its own (eventually).
Pain can appear to come from a different location to where the trouble spot is (if you take the example of a heart attack, you might know that many people having a heart attack experience pain in their left arm which is not where the heart is located!), so if you have a back problem, it might give you symptoms that seem to come from somewhere else.
Only a doctor can tell you what your exact problem is and the doctor will need to know your exact symptoms so keep on to him/her and make sure you are not ignoring something that could/should be treated.
