Constantly spraining my joints, don't know what to do anymore!

Hi, I'm 24 and have only realised I have Hypermobility for the last 4 years or so. I have very weak joints and it's becoming a big issue in my life. I work as an actor and drama teacher so my work is active, but I am constantly spraining my ankles especially. It's incredibly painful and means I can't work. Obviously the more I do it, the easier they sprain! I am just at a total loss. It's making me so depressed. I worked at an event and even carrying a pot of tea and pouring it gave me pain in my wrists and my finger joints. I tried physio and the guy would only teach me for one joint, not my entire condition, so I stopped going as it wasn't helping me.

Does anyone with this problem have any advice? I am so sick and tired of being in pain and injuring myself doing regular activities.

Thanks in advance for any help xx

Hi. I have this problem but not quite as bad. I fin that now I'm older it comes and goes. Was pretty bad when I was yr age. Used crutches for 2 years because of my hip joints.

My only suggestion is to try swimming as on overall strengthening exercise.

Also find a specialist that deals with eds. Part of that syndrome is severe hypermobility so they often have advice.

Good luck. It is a real pain and can be depressing. Try to stay positive.

    Hi Alishala,

Have you tried kinesiology tape or ankle supports? Before I was officially diagnosed with hypermobility then hypermobile EDS I sprained my ankle pretty badly and after 3 months or so of constant pain and rolling both ankles regularly I got some of that tape - cheap stuff at first, which didn't work and was painful to remove - but the proper sports tape was excellent.

My ankles (along with everything else) constantly in pain now and I have to take copious amount of pain meds as well as walking with crutches, but I wear braces/supports now as the tape is too tiring to use.

Maybe ask your GP to refer you to orthotist for braces/supports and maybe physio.

Well done for still working an energetic job, but please be careful in case it causes permanent damage

    Good Luck

    Ery
