Constipation 17 month old Daughter

My daughter is 17 months old and suffers with constipation. She has been on Lactulose previously which did nothing for her. She is currently on Movicol and has been now for about 6 months. The doseage varies daily between 1 and 2 Sachets.

Without Movicol she doesnt go to the toilet regularly and really struggles when she does go. We have had blood in the nappy and she has even torn.

We have seen a paediatric doctor who thinks tjat she needs to be on Movicol longer term but lately she is struggling to sleep as she has got terrible wind and seems thirsty all the time. Has anyone else had experience of this with Movicol?

It is just horrible having to watch my little one struggle with this.

Thanks

Oh my gosh - how awful for your littel girl - that is not fair.  sad  Must be so hard for you.

I am 54 and trying to deal with a tear following severe constipation - a result of pain medication from bowel surgery - and I an barely stand it, and I know whats happening - your little girl must be so unhappy and not understand why.  sad  I am so sorry for you all.

Movicol DOES give me wind, and the wind is painful with a tear.  For me, its not gentle - its wind that comes from deep within, can almost feel it rumble through, and then when it passes, its not a soft whiff - its a sharp burst of air.  I found after takeing Movicol (up to 10 sachets a day!) for weeks - I think it started being counterproductive.  Maybe your doctor can try something a little gentler now?

I sure hope you get to the bottom of this.  What a nightmare for you.  xx

So sorry to hear that.  To have constipation and tear at such an early age is terrible. Hope you find lots of answers here.  Don't know about Movicol much as we in the US have Miralax which is kind of similar to Movicol.  I had fissurectomy two years ago and I thought the ordeal was over once I had the surgery.  But I guess unless someone tries to change their dietary habits or lifestyle the whole nine yards, things do not improve or stay normal.  I was almost getting new cuts and that's when I took a 90 degree turn for the better.  I gave up processed food, drinks or anything that was not homemade.  Turns out my thyroid wasn't working well and hence had a brush with the auto immune disease that affected my stomach.  I gave up gluten and dairy.  Things improved but not to my expected levels.  This is when I thought of checking each and every item that I consumed to see if there was anything that my sensitive stomach could not handle.  The first was my breakfast cereal.  It was fortified with iron, calcium and all sorts of vitamins and minerals that I did not need.  This is when I decided to eat only home cooked meals.  So I urge you to go through all the food (including vitamins or medicine) that she has been consuming.   Give her meals that are homemade, is soft and soluble.  To heal the fissure, please make her sit in a tub half full of water mixed with a little (say 2 tbspn) of Epsom salt.  Do it only once for three days.  This speeds up the healing.  Apply vitamin E oil after the sitz bath.  Make her drink warm water.  Hope these remedies work.

Hi Tau....just curious about the Sitz Baths with salts for just three days - I have been doing this quite regularly - am I over doing it?  Should I not use salt, or not do that baths at al??  I would be so annoyed with myself if I were actually delaying the healing progress of my fissure!!!  Thank you!
