constipation for roughly 4 years

Hi everyone,
First time on this forum (or any health forum) so hello first of all!
So down to the issue! I've been constipated for about 4 years straight now, my stools are always soft, I can easily go a week without going to the toilet. Sometimes I'll have this 1 day where I seem to be constantly flatulating and it always stinks really bad. Within the 4 years I've always been in full time work but it got a bit much for me so I quit my job this February to focus on my health. I also have strong headaches on a daily basis which seems related, whenever my stomach hurts or cramps I then get a strong headache.
Since quitting my job I also changed Doctors as within those years I never got anywhere. Movicol seemed to be the only thing that helps me go at all, I've tried Lactulose and another stimulant laxative which name I forget, it did nothing for me though other than seriously hurt my insides. Problem with Movicol is if I stick to it, I end up going to the bathroom like 6 times a day and even then every time I go practically nothing is happening. Again of course the stools are very soft.
I've had blood tests for IBD which game back negative. Had loads of them
Just came back from one of those X Rays where I take a pill the Wednesday before but apparently it's went straight through me. That makes it look like I have nothing wrong with me but clearly I do.
I can't have any sort of relationship. I tried but i feel terrible every day, mentally and physically so it wasn't fair on her.
Sometimes i notice the stools are very sticky and stick to the side of the toilet. Also sometimes a little light blood on toilet paper from a cut that never seems to heal.
Alcohol usually hurts my stomach, especially the morning after so I rarely drink. It seems to make going to the toilet more difficult. If I have a lot of sugar in the day such as an energy drink it seems to help me go (I don't use these as a remedy, just some info).
You can probably tell I'm trying to tell you everything I know so sorry for all the writing :D
I've tried massively increasing my fiber and water intake but nothing seemed to change at all. Tried fiber supplements too such as psyllium husks and dried fruit such as figs but nothing changed.
I'm not sure I'm missing anything. I know it's difficult but does anyone have any ideas? The doctor will probably think I'm fine at this point but I'm really not my last 4 years have been miserable and I can't work as too many days I have heavy cramps and headaches and I can't focus. Not to mention sometimes I need to rush to the bathroom.
Final bit of information is I never feel as though I have fully had a bowel movement. I always feel like I'm not finished.
Thanks a lot for your time everyone.

I should also add I don't eat a great deal. I weigh 9St and my height is about 5ft 10.5 so I think I'm slightly underweight. Being the way I am though it destroys my appetite. Always feel full

I had many of the same symptoms you did.
Get your hands on Magnesium Citrate...its a supplement.
I have never felt better.
Sounds to me like you may have a Magnesium deficiency..but look up the symptoms of that..and work with your Dr.
For me..as soon as I read the symptoms I went to the store and bought Magnesium (not the OXIDE brand). And I popped one in the parking lot.
For the past 2 weeks, I have been calm..sleeping better and have had NORMAL bathroom habits.

Thank you very much for taking the time to response Misssy, really appreciate it. That sounds hopeful I'll do some research on that thank you.
Glad to hear you're a lot better now. It's torture :D

So far I've ordered some Magnesium for Holland & Barret and it just arrived today. I'll have 1 tablet a day and see if I notice any change. They had no celery seed but i'll see what I can find
I hope to make some progress. The doctors and hospital are just giving up on me

You can probably find celery seed in the supermarket. Also a few days ago on this site someone was praising Epsom salt as solving their problem. Of course you would want to read up on this before trying. You might want to read previous posts to get some more ideas. Maybe you'll find more than one answer. I'm hoping you'll get back to work soon

Hi Brandon 😊 it's awful to hear how much you're suffering bless you ??
It might be a shot in the dark but all the symptoms you're having really sound like a condition called 'Ulcerative Colitis' if you search for it on the internet, I think you might agree it could be a huge possibility. I really hope you can finally get some relief!
As for the constipation, I've been suffering for years but mine's the opposite, I have really hard stools, I've tried everything and I mean EVERYTHING! The only thing that I've found that works without pain is magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) believe it or not! Two teaspoons in a cup of juice give really good relief, they draw water into your bowels and gently stimulate them so you also get the urge to go, I swear by them!
I hope this helps you, even if it's just a little 😊

Hi Elly,
Thanks a lot, really appreciate the help. I'll certainly have a search for that. GP's just constantly offer laxatives and the Specialist (since that barium pill thing) no doubt thinks I'm fine which is frustrating.
Yes a previous commenter mentioned Epsom Salt which is interesting. I've been trying Magnesium tablets as suggested but they haven't helped. Maybe I've got mixed up as there's Magnesium, Magnesium Sulphate and Magnesium Citrate haha. So I'll try that thank you.
It's a shame you've been struggling so much too. Have you ever tried Lactulose? Got prescribed to me once and it did nothing for me but apparently it's designed to soften stools. It was a drink.
Thank you for your help!

That's okay, it's just that I have a friend with the same condition and it's that similar, it's almost as if he wrote it lol! There's no where near enough information out there on ulcerative colitis (meaning doctors and leaflets etc.)
I've tried lactulose, it worked a little but I'm on a lot of medication and every single one of them causes constipation plus, I've always suffered from it so all those meds make it 10x worse! My main problem is not getting that 'urge' because of the meds, that's why magnesium sulfate works so well for me, it softens and doesn't give that 'painful urge' like most other laxatives, it's really gentle. Thankyou for your suggestion though, I really appreciate it 😀 I really hope you manage to find out what's wrong, it's awful knowing you're suffering and not being able to help, it's the main reason I joined, to help others with my own experiences. If they help just one person, it's worth it.
All the best, Elly x

I see, maybe it is that then. I'm off to bed now so I'll have a read tomorrow morning.
That's a real shame all the medication just makes the problem worse difficult living with multiple health issues as they always affect one another.
It is amazing people like you give up your free time to help so thank you very much, enjoy your day

Hi everyone.
So I've bought some Magnesium Sulphate today (Epsom Salts) as everyone seems to find them helpful. Just had a bath to see if that helps, also gunna ingest some with water too so thank you for that.
Tried standard magnesium but that doesn't seem to do anything for me, maybe I should've triee Magnesium Citrate instead.
Thanks everyone

I always do thank you.
I really wish the hospital could at least give me an official diagnosis so I know how to treat it. Could even be a physical / muscle problem I don't know. Until then I have to improve with ideas from you fine people.
Thanks again!

Yeah maybe. I'd imagine they'd just give generic advice though, mines a less common situation with my stools being very soft and still struggling to go.
At least online I can explain myself properly
