Hello ive asked this before but would like to ask again,i didnt have cataracts but i did lose my lense in an accident years ago,so i have recently had a corneal transplant in the eye and my surgeon does not want to insert an artifical lense into the eye at least not anytime soon as she does not wsnt to incease the chance of my graft rejecting.so my question is has anyone had there lense out of there eye and used a contact lense instead of an artifical lense implant?if so what was vision like afterwards?should good vision be obtained?thanks

I had monofocal lenses implanted in both eyes when I had my cataract surgery done 3 years ago. I had been very nearsighted, and have astigmatism. My monofocal lenses were set for distance. However, because I remain astigmatic I still needed glasses for both distance and close-up. Last year, for vanity reasons, I decided to try contact lenses. I got measured and fitted and had no problem wearing or using them. In my case, due to astigmatism, I had to go the "monovision" route, with one contact lens set for distance and one set for close-up. This provided less than optimal focus and for that reason I eventually stopped using them and returned full-time to my tri-focal glasses. Nonetheless, I had no problem actually wearing contact lenses. I think, as long as your Dr. agrees, you should be fine wearing contacts.

Hi Wonderwall, someone with first hand experience and knowledge will eventually find you thread and post here. :-)
From the knowledge-based internet, after a corneal graft no part of the cornea should be touched with a contact lens other than a "scleral lens" to correct astigmatism. "Scleral lenses are completely safe since they can be measured to ensure they vault over the cornea." Thus, your surgeon must be referring to the better grade lenses for your specific purposes.
While you take good care for a complete recovery, there will be new technology with best lenses worth the wait. Already there is a new Pinhole IOL that could make a Toric IOL so passé.

Facebook has several support groups for "corneal graft" as well as for "aphakia". It is easy to set up a Facebook account, and then search and join any one of the groups. All the best in your speedy recovery.
