Continued IBS flare up

Hi

Just wanted to know if it's normal to have a flare up ongoing for several weeks now. I go from constipation to loose bowel movements. Can't seem to get it right. I have to go from immodium to bowel softeners. I also have a constant nagging pain feels like a wound on the left lower side. Anyone else have this kind of pain?

I have diverticulitus and they say that the flare ups are like symptamatic IBS... So What you are describing is how this whole past year has been for me. So yes that is very normal but its not being controlled well. And it's very frustrating because nobody really has a whole lot of information to help its just trial and error. I did find after the first several months that some foods were triggering the loose stools because they were causing irritation in my colon. For me it was milk any tomato or red sauces orange juice--and I am still comming to terms that even when bowel habits are better....meats seem yo cause the constant aching yo return. I also saw gatroenterologit who prescribed amatryptaline for colon spasms which did help alot. But I am still battling daily with this issue. Right now I am dealing with another infection that started over 6 weeks ago and have been on 2 antibiotics for 4 weeks and still feel awful.

      Hi Jude

I am sorry to hear that and thanks for replying. I also have diverticulosis and was treated for diverticulitis 4 times this year with antibiotics. My last bout was June 1 but Specialist and Surgeon feel that it was severe IBS because I did not respond to the medication. It actually made me worse. I have another appt. Monday with GP.

sorry you are not feeling well.  I was told by my dr after a colonoscopy that he could see that I had colon spasms.  Always curious what are colon spasms.

      Thanks Vivan

Thanks....That's horrible that your not responding to meds. Even with my infections all of my lab results are within normal range?? And with each flare up...with or w/out antibiotics more often than not, I usually have that pain. When I had colonoscopy they said I had multiple diverticuli and there was no reason I should be having so much pain?? Probiotics'Align' seemed to make a difference and the amatryptaline. I know that my turning point where I really felt better an was able TO START feeling a little better was after colonoscopy prep....once my whole system was cleaned out. So there is definately a connection to that. Also know it could be more of a detriment to do that on my own since doing it with too much inflamation could make things worse. Good luck w\ your appt. Monday....

Yes I figured it out did you get spasms you can block food in between the spasms causes it to stay there too long from its causes gas bloating and could cause blockages or would they call pseudo blockages I guess and then when it releases that's when you get the diarrhea it just forces it out or vice versa can hold it too long deplete all the water out of it and cause it to get dry and then you get constipated

I've been having that feeling in my left side for about 3 months now and it's finally starting to subside because of probiotics and watching what I'm eating I wonder also about colon spasms, do you think spasms csn keep food from moving through your GI system and cause the constipation and the bloating and the feeling of inflammation in the left side all the way down to the lower abdomen you think. Also is there any major or long term side effecrs or damage from amitriptyline. And when you say pain do you sometimes think it's more of a gnawing feeling or irritation/inflamation and maybe some gas pain every once in awhile. I never get constipation just soft stool and no diarrhea either. I just had a CT with contrast they cleared me and said I had no divinticulitis don't know what divinticulosis is yet or the difference but has anybody had a CT and been cleared of diverticulitis and then turns out you have actually been misdiagnosed because my symptoms seem like they could be divinticulitis and irritable bowel I'm sure.

      Hi

I had a colonoscopy and CT last year. Confirmed IBS and diver. These are pockets that grow in the lining of the colon. When they get infected it becomes diverticulitis. Usually causes some fever chills and severe pain. My pain feels like a wound.

hi i have got IBS i do get a lot of loose bowel movements as well and i do get a lot of tummy pains i am on tablets for it i find stress can make things a lot worse

Yup, I have had flare ups that last for a month. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water, and be careful with the immodium. You could be making things worse for yourself buy going through a constant cycle of constipation and diarrhoea.

As for diverticulitis, avoid things like nuts and seeds and fruit with pips as this will make it worse. Have you tried anti spasmodic like buscopan?

      Hi everyone

Thanks for all you replies. Yes I am on Bentylol. My cycle appears to be flare ups every two months. Surgeon told me to call him while I am having a flare up and he will book me right away for CT. As it is now questionable. He said he is not sure if it is IBS Diver or something else. What do you think he meant by something else. I am kind of scared. I am calling him on Monday agter GP appr.
