Continuous pain in groin
Posted , 10 users are following.
Morning everyone, has any person experienced groin pain well after having THR.
I had my left hip replaced in 2017, since then I have had continuous pain in the groin area, my consultant put me in for m.r.i scans, bone scan, cortisone injections all which came back negative,
I am now on the waiting list to have a ct scan, I mentioned to my consultant that all the previous scans ,x Ray's, etc have all shown negative results, what's the chances a ct scan will be any different , I asked him if that was the case then what else could it be, he mentioned it could now be that the ball in the socket may need realignment.
My question is, has anybody else experienced this and what was there outcome, I have changed my car from manual to auto because I cannot lift my leg up when in certain positions, I struggle going up stairs but not coming down, cannot lift my leg to put socks , shoes ,underwear on etc.
If I have to have surgery again, is it a simple procedure or is it a case of removing part or full hip.
Any help and information would be most welcome.

Hi - I have had two revisions following continued pain after THR - as with you I have had several scans etc but nothing found. I have now been discharged as they can't do anything else which isn't very helpful to me and I continue to suffer and its getting worse

Hi Nathalie, sorry to hear that, surely you must be able to find another consultant to re take your case on, when you are in constant pain you need help, I've has both hips done ,but my left side hip has never been right since it was done and that was in 2017,
when the pain was at it's very worse I struggled with everything, coming off work, not being able to do the things I once enjoyed doing, this has led to mental health problems as well as trying to take my life.
Fortunately I am still here but still caught in this vicious pain cycle. see your GP to demand another consultation, you cannot live the rest of your life in pain.
keep me posted .

i wish ii has a solution but it is nice to see someone with the same issue i had a right THR in July 2018 i continued to have thigh abd groin pain after months of PT and continuous ct scans they finally told me that i needed a right hip illiopsoas surgery which is to lenghten the hip flexor muscle. i had that in Jan 2019 . i have been going to PT since then and continued to have issues walking up stairs, bending down, getting off a toilet or couch. in july 2019 inhad two procdeures ( tenX and PRP) to eliminate scar tissue. it is now Dec 2019 and i still have groin and thigh pain and cant go upstairs or do any cardio activity ( jog, jumping jacks, etc) . i am miserable

Hi Audrey, I've had some lovely people answering my questions, but like yours you mention lengthening the hip flexor muscle and tenx and PRP what exactly is this and what is it worth going through all the pain again, do they take the other hip out or is it a case of adding something to it

Anterior or posterior procedure?

Thanks steve, still non the wiser, I'm just worried when my consultant has now mentioned it could be the ball that sits in the cup could want realligning, if so is it a big job or just routine surgery, don't relish the idea of been laid up as when first had hip replaced

My initial problem was groin pain in both sides, before my surgery. I was told I needed both hips replacing, I got the right one done December 3 2018 and left one was done April 16 2019 my recovery has been very slow! I still have groin pain both sides, the left hip seems to be recovering better than my right hip, however the pain in my groin on right side is worse than it was before, I still have pain both sides and finding it very difficult to sleep. I am going back to my surgeon to have it checked, Not sure when but hopefully soon. I am finding it very difficult to drive although i have an automatic so I know where you are coming from! I am doing physiotherapy and have started going to the gym which is limited due to not being able to lift my legs! Stairs are a big problem going up, not as bad coming down. I hope I am able to get it fixed as its very frustrating seeing other people recovering in 6 weeks and here I am a year on. Best of luck Cyndey

Hi Cyndey, yeah its painful going upstairs and trying to get in my car, go in backside first it may help you.
I still have problems trying to sleep on both sides, but I find it helps me if I place a pillow between my legs.
I was told initially that it can take upto a year before your fully free from pain, 3 years in and I'm in more pain than what I started with, physio, injections, scans,,accupuncure, pain killers all to no effect.
it's just a case of managing pain on a daily basis, your not alone on this.

Hello,
I'm so sorry you are having this groin pain, I know exactly how you feel as I also had a RTHP in December '17 and am continuing to have pretty constant pain. Like you, I have had many investigations, cortisone injections, hip aspirations, bone scan and ct scan but nothing conclusive. At present I am having yet another cortisone next week and a 3d print of my hip is being done. The psoas is a possible cause of the pain, has this been mentioned to you?. Two years on and still with significant pain is no fun is it?
Best wishes,

Hi Mary, sorry to hear your in the same boat as quite a few of us already, you mentioned in your reply posts, what exactly does that stand for as when I do ask doctors or consultants any questions I seem to hit a brick wall .

Guess you mean the psoas, it is a major hip flexor. and can cause problems such irritation or impingement of the cup.Audrey mentioned it in her post.I feel so frustrated not only with the pain but with the long gaps between all these investigations and the follow up appointments. Hope you get some answers soon.

Hi again Mary, is this classed as major surgery to have done or is it routine, I know it sounds a daft question to ask, but does it involve taking the artificial hip out or just modifying it somehow, how long was you able to get mobile again and up on your feet, and mostly has this being beneficial to have done, I'm just lost in what can they do next or is this the last resort, sorry for all the questions.

graham and all
the hip replacement was major in that it required a hospital stay The hip illiopsoas wqs outpatient but dont let that fool you i had it in january and didnt get off crutches until April ( vs walking right away using a cane with the replacement ) this surgery is lengthenjng the hip flexor muscle. My muscle was shredded and needed to be cleaned up as well as lenghtened ( think of a rubber band- if you shave off the sides a little then it stretches more and in my case went over thr new hip better)But it caused a great deal of scar tissue and the tenX procedure which is much easier ( in office surgical center), basically sucks out the scar tissue.
i am not sure what i am going to do now. i am going back to my surgeon this week but also seeking another opinion. i need to be back to exercising but more importantly, i want to go upstairs without pain

Thanks Audrey, I'm understanding it a bit more now, at least when I go back to see my consultant I will have some sensible questions to ask him, then hopefully I will get a sensible answer back from him.
Once again Audrey and all on this forum you have all been a great help to me.

im just now reading this thread and i can totally sympathize with you guys , i had my rthr 4/2/19 and have been in constant pain since . I also had to go have 2nd and 3rd opinions multiple xrays , ct scans , hip aspirations , and mri's finally the third orthopedic surgeon diagnosed it as the iliopsoas tendon and will be doing my arthroscopic partial release surgery on 12/31/19 . Not sure if this is the fix or not because even my surgeon gave me a 50/50 chance , im really hoping it does if not i will have to be referred to a hip revision specialist . Anyone with info on this procedure or recovery please let me know how you did

Good morning everyone, I've just read your thread juanita, what you have said could be the same thing as what I might need doing.
I'm down to have another ct scan which if it's like all the other scans I've had I reckon this will come back negative.
like you have mentioned if any person has had a athroscopic partial release can you also give all the details on what this actually involves and what to expect.
I'll update my thread on this when I get the answers from my consultant.

I'd just like to say to everyone on the forum a happy new year and hope 2020 is going to be better year than this one.
