COPD

Posted , 4 users are following.

I have had copd since the age of 3 months, pnemonia 3 times and tb when l was 9 years, my lungs are totally shot and now the doc has been suggesting l have oxygen as my intake level is down to 81% on a good day.

It scare's me a little as l still work partime, do my own housework and shop, l would turn a few heads going round our local supermarket with a oxygen tank attached.

What make's me so angry is that everyone assumes l smoke NEVER in my 63 years have l smoked. Just ill health from the start and no NHS when l was born, l think myself very lucky.

    Hi Kellycat,

I really feel for you, although I have COPD, which was not helped by smoking. I have been on oxy for some time and find that walking around with it is fine, once you have got used to it.

Remember that the oxy will keep you strong and keep your major organs in good condition by ensuring they get the oxy they need.

It does sound like you have the Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency model - and it also sounds as though you have done remarkably well with it so far.

May I recommend that you contact the following the Alpha 1 support body for more information and help (google it), as people no longer use this forum.

    Good luck

Kadija - I will post something separately. Patient UK site has information if you put the words ' Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency ' in search box. In brief its a hereditary form of COPD and can be identified with a simple blood test.
