how long does it take when you give up smoking to start feeling back to yourself I hate feeling like this.

Hi it's common to feel worse for months when giving up smoking. This is caused by 2 things - first smoking can mask other issues so they come to the fore when you stop. Second it can also cause problems such as thyroid problems.

I have mild copd but consider myself very lucky as 44 years of heavy smoking should have left my lungs completely destroyed and probably dead. There comes a point when it's not about feeling healthier but damage limitation which is what I have now.

I managed to stop for 16 months but started again 6 weeks ago. I must try again. I did stop though with the help of a Quit smoking site which I found under the Health Unlocked platform who were marvelous in helping me stop so why not join them or another one? Good luck. x

I found out when on the site there are many symptoms of stopping smoking - which doctors never tell you about when advising you to give up! I think they are worried about putting people off.

I had to face the fact I had to stop coz if you wait for smoking to give you up then it's probably curtains. Scary but true. x

As it should be apparent, most here consider quitting smoking to be a very personal and high priority subject. We care a lot and know what is at stake . So please don't feel that you are being lectured to or preached at, Your success is the prime goal and having traveled that road, making it less bumpy is for some a way to pay back for the help that we received when we traveled it.

Please feel free to call upon any of us if you feel the need. Best of Luck !

      Hi Larry,

I am not doing great to be honest as still smoking. I have tried to cut down but every time i do something goes wrong and i then smoke. I know i am concerned about many aspects of my health at the moment which is causing me great concern and cannot get to the Doctors to get these checked out as i cant drive anymore due to my disability so i have to rely on my husband and then the Doctors are closed. I have been feeling quite breathless this week and dizzy so i no i have to stop smoking but the more i worry the more i smoke. A vicious circle really and i feel my lungs are really suffering at the moment. Hopefully i will have a stress free weekend then i can give quitting a really good go.

Thank you for asking how we are doing it means a lot to me knowing i am not alone. Hope you are doing well.

      Mandy,

I fully understand your struggle, but giving in and going back to smoke another cigarette may ease your temporary distress is only showing your not mentally fighting the battle to quit as well.

What you must realise is that to stop smoking you must fight two addictions at the same time. The physical addiction, we all know. The physiological addiction can be even harder.

I started by first getting rid of every cigarette, cigarette butt, pipe/pipe tobacco so that getting anything to light up was a full trip to a store. Next, I provided myself hard candy, snacks, etc. so that I could substitute something comforting for the craving. Time lessens the physical addiction, but the first week to ten days are always the hardest. After that, as you turn the table on it, your pride in quitting helps you to deal with not relapsing back. If you have someone that can be with you 24 hours for the first 3 to 4 days, then that truely gives support.

Excuses and playing games is not the way to overcome this monster that has control of you. It's hard to be sure, but to win you must be stronger.

Your online support will be here for you, so don't ever stop trying.

      LOVE ! xxx

I totally agree with you Larry my mental attitude to quitting is basically oh well i will try tomorrow. Trouble is with that is the next day i do the same then it will be too late as i will have no time left to quit. Usually i am very strong and i have been making excuses as although the past few months have been extremely stressful smoking is in reality adding to my problems rather than helping. I need to keep thinking of the positive outlook of quitting. Better health, More money and not stressing about dying cause of smoking. I have the whole course of patches here ready to start and my husband is home all day from Friday until Monday so this would be a good time to quit as i have someone here with me. I will let you know how i'm doing on Monday as hopefully i would have gone 3 days without a cigarette. Fingers crossed ,
