Copd tiredness at home only

Hi,

Can anyone help... My mom is a copd sufferer and is on oxygen 24/7 and NIV machine at night.

She has been in and out of hospital a dozen times this year due to low oxygen levels. Once at Hospital she is a complete different person, she is alert, chatty and completely 'with it'. Within 2 days of being home she can't keep her eyes open, she becomes withdrawn and lethargic. She is on the Same amount of oxygen at home as at hospital and no one seems to know why this happens. We Have had her concentrator checked and all is fine with that. Does anyone have any suggestions on why this may be? It's awful to see her the way she is at home compared to hospital but is always keen to get home.

Thanks

Lou

    Hi Lou

I am wondering if your mom has nebulizer meds whilst in hospital and at home? If she doesn't have a nebulizer at home I wonder if this may help her, you would have to speak to her respiratory team about this to see if this would be suitable for your mom.

I would ask the hospital consultant what medicines your mom received in hospital aside from the oxygen then you may be able to pin point the reasons for alertness in hospital and not at home.

The only other thing I can think of would be new people to chat too, different things going on at the hospital (if this is the case you may be able to access a day centre for her to go to once or twice a week where she meet with others)

Hope you can find a solution for this.

Best wishes to you and your mom.

    Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Yes she is on nebs 6 times a day at hospital and at home. We have had a meeting with the consultant and she suspects that maybe my mom is relaxed in hospital as she feels safe there, it might be that without even realising it she is getting herself into a state at home. She is in hospital at the moment and this time we be released with meds to try and combat that... Have to see how that goes, fingers crossed.

    Thanks again

    Take care
