cortison + bipolar = SERIOUS MANIA

I had a cortisone injection and SEVERE PAIN in the area for 12 hours. Then I had a serious mania like I have never known. It was just very severe and involved serious relationship harm.  Am I just imagining that the cortisone injected in to a shoulder joint cause this? Rox

Hi Rox. I am bipolar, and a few years ago I hurt my elbow, and was given cortisone injections, and I too had a manic reaction (though not as severe a reaction as you seemed to have had). This may well be due to the effects and side-effects of cortisone on some people (like bipolars).  If you check out cortisone on Wikipedia, you will see that it says "Cortisone and adrenaline are the main hormones released by the body as a reaction to stress. They elevate blood pressure and prepare the body for a fight or flight response". That is, cortisone stimulates your body and mind, and can make you feel like you want to 'fight' (physically or verbally). Listed side-effects include anxiety. In short, yes, a manic reaction to cortisone is quite possible in predisposed people. Good luck.

YES.  You problemly had an anxiety attack from the cortisone shot.  are you scared of needles?  Please try to self-talk calming yourself.  tell you how great you are and that things will get better.  also know within yourself that nothing lasts forever everything has to come to past.  You will be able tolive a normal life and can learn from this experience and help somebody else. see yourself looking back at this once you have moved on.

Hey Rox I am bipolar as well. Last summer I had a really bad asthma fit lasting for a couple weeks cause we had a bad drought where I live. I haven't been that bad since I was a kid.  My Dr. put me on a coarse of oral Prednisone (same thing but taken by mouth).  You have to wean off of it... When I came off of it I had a horrible manic episode.  Man was it scary too.  I had heard that can happen but figured I was on too low of a dose.  Us bipolars have to be really careful with stuff like that cause our brains have a totallly different response.  (I am also a (disabled) Nurse)  thanks to this disorder.......Always tell the Dr. you are bipolar and what meds you take whatever situation you end up in when there is an emergency they need to know, there are other alternatives.....take care!
