Yes, I have. I had it done 4 time before my THR and twice after. It worked for a year and a half before the THP. but have not effect after.

Don't worry, (at least for me - I've have high tolerance for pain), it did not hurtand the local anesthesia numes the pain.

2 yrs ago I had one.. worked for short time - couple of weeks! - but that was all. So then had arthroscopy, that gave relief only for couple  of months, then had THR!  Hip is now fine, just the muscle strain to be sorted and that will be HOPEFULLY, following cortisone into tendons 3rd March.

I have had two different kinds. One into the side because of bursitis and the other straight in from the front while under sedation. Each one worked but of course wore off in a few weeks. No regrets though.

Good luck and will be thinking of you Paula!

I had one into a bursitis on the side of my hip which has worked and an arthroscopy into the hip itself which wore off after two weeks. Am having THR next week. The injections were uncomfortable but not painful

Hi had one to diagnose my hip problem . Dr who did it was great and it didn't hurt but didn't work either which they said proved I needed THR . Good luck

Hi Paula,  Similar story to others, I too had both types with arthroscopy inbetween but only lasted few weeks so THR booked for 20/4.  Think you have to try it as for some it lasts months and gives relief from pain and puts off the THR for a bit longer. Was uncomfortable as apposed to painful.

    Hi Paula

Slightly different .....I had one because of the fracture I had after the THR ....it was given in the outside of my leg at the top.

It worked for four months and is starting to wear off now but is still not as sore as it was before.  I have to ring him to make an appointment to see him to talk about another one.

Go for it....it didnt hurt at all like others have said

      Hi Eileen

I have just read your post saying that you had a fracture after the THR surgeryI have one as well, I'm 3weeks post op on a revision (because the 1st surgery was badly done a year ago) and not full weight bearing and on crutches. Did you get much pain from the fracture? And how long was it befor you could  put you weight on your leg and walk with sticks.

      Hi Lorrraine

My fracture was "the greater trochanter bone" and it snapped and a bit of bone moved so will never be close enough to the other bit to knit together again.

I'm on crutches permanently.....For the four weeks post op until this happened I was walking the same as the rest of people on the forum that have had a THR. after that they gave me crutches and I was weight bearing all the time

I've got a lot of pain from it.

I cant walk with sticks at all.....they dont give me enough support.

I've tried it and tried my four wheel walker and end up with a very sore right arm because I'm putting so much support on that arm {left hip that fractured} and if I go to far {that was fourteen months ago!!!!!!} I have a very sore left leg as well.

Apparently a revision would have been no good. They said there was nothing they could do about it.

The only thing that has worked is a cortisone injection in my leg.....at the top on the outside {if that makes sense} for the first couple of months there was no pain there at all.....It was mostly in bed I had the pain and it kept waking me up......so that was great......at about 3 months, still no pain at night time but sore when I got up in the morning.......but after moving about and 2 paracetamol it eased off.

Now its starting to waken me at night again although not as badly as before.

I'm going to ring the consultant on Monday and see if he will see me and give me another one.

      Love

Hi everyone, thanks for your comments.

So, had the injection, which didn't hurt, just felt a little uncomfortable.  Unfortunately it has been really ineffective, am actually in more pain now than before!

Looks like I will be pushing on with the THR, have a date for pre-op assessment on 39th March.

    Thanks

    Paula

I meant 30th March, bet the NHS wish there were 39 days in a month lol!

Aww Paula I'm sorry.....is there not a chance it will work given time? When did you have it.?

I've had various injections in my back for spinal problems and they didnt work so I know how you feel but the one cortisone I had in my leg did work but is wearing off now.......just over four months now.

I'll ring him again and make an appointment and see if i can have another one

      Good luck with everything

The way they wotked on me before my THR was intially they lasted around 5 month, then 4, then 3, then 1, then 2 weeks. Gradually they los their effectness.

They never helped fater the THR.

Hi Paula, Yes I don't think they work much for anyone.... not too sure why the NHS use hem when in the end it results in a THR, I think it is just a delaying tactic but isn't this a waste of NHS resources.  A fried of mine has a knee problem, had an arthroscopy 2 yrs ago, is now scheduled for another, so why not cut to the chase and do a knee replacement as eventually that is what she will have. Far better than going thru all these yrs of pain and meds, esp. as she is a hairdresser and always on her feet!

Hi Eileen, they did say it can take a week for the steroid to take effect but from reading the forums I can see most people who find them effective feel an almost immediate relief.  I on the other hand seem to be in more pain than before, even all my medication seems to be unable to kill the pain.

Roll on operation date 😜 x

      Hi Gillee

I totally agree!  However they do seem to work for some and I presume the cost of the injection is minimal compared to the cost of a THR!

I understand why they like you to wait as long as possible before having a THR, however, at only 46 I would rather have quality of life now and worry about potential revision surgery later.  After all I will only be in my early 60's then, surely revision surgery would be better then than at 70!

It's all about quality of life.... if you have a surgeon that thinks like that  - as I did - then you get a THR.  I ride horses, endurance long distance - well I did! And as that was my way of life, I got the THR altho perhaps I was considered "older" 61 when I had the op.  BUT I still have not ridden... all on track to do so mid Nov until I "buggered" - technical term! my abductor, iliopsoas musckes and tendons.. BUT hoeully all will again be on track after 3rd March when I have my cortisone inj's into the tendons to reduce inflammation.  BUT hip joint is perfect!! Mind you I might get on a friend's quiet Arab mare.  She is narrow, NOT like my mare who, normally narrown is now on the plump side after being on field rest (Hah!) since last June!!

I WISH there was a spell check on this Forumlol

Fortunately for me too my surgeon looks for the quality of life, even though they booked me for the injection they also added me to the waiting list for the THR at the same time as they didn't think it would help.

Good luck with your recovery and I hope you are back on your horse soon, be careful if you do decide to try out your friends mare!

Hi Paula, i also had the cortisone 6 weeks before i had my hip replacement, and it hurt like mad, and it didnt do a damn thing, made it worse in fact, so within 6 weeks i had the thr, so i personally wouldnt recommend it, but then we are all different, good luck with your op. hope it goes alright, Chris

      Hi Chris

Sounds like mine has gone the same way as yours, it was worth a shot, no pun intended!

      Thanks
