Costochondritis pain and discomfort

I am a 39 yr old mother of a 5yr old daughter. I live in Newry, northern Ireland.
I was diagnosed with costochondritis 2 years ago this month. Like everyone elses case I have read on here I was totally convinced there was something more serious wrong with me and argued with my Doctor for a long time about it.
It started when I got a flu while on holidays and the only thing that I can think may
have brought it on was the coughing. It comes and goes every couple of months but there isn't a day that I don't get some kind of pain in my back or chest area. Just
before Christmas last year while driving to work I took really sharp chest pain and
felt like my heart was jumping around in my chest. This panicked me as I thought I
was having a heart attack. I pulled into the hard shoulder as I had my little girl in the car with me and I was finding it difficult to breath. The panic stopped after a while and I went straight to A&E. They did numerous tests, ECG, chest Xrays, blood tests, you name it and in the end they said they agreed with my GP that it was
costochondritis. They put me in Diclofenic tabs, which are anti inflammatory. They did help and the condition eased up after a few days but it wasn't long til it reared its ugly head again. so for me its 2 weeks of severe pain and maybe 4-5 weeks of bearable pain then back to severe pain again.
I am down at minute but this time its really bad, it seems each time I get it It is more severe. I am now on naproxin which to be honest I find useless. Pain killers are not working and even the hot water bottle which I found great is no use this time.
The majority of my pain in in my back between my shoulder blades and travels up into my neck and shoulders, sometimes down my arms. Although I have chest pain the worst is in my back, though if I were to press on my ribs at the front I could scream with pain.
I find this time with it being worse it is affecting my moods. I am snapping at my little girl all the time which I feel terrible about, and I just dont want to do anything. Work is just a nightmare recently. I am normally an upbeat person and very little gets me down, but it is really taking its toll. I have had this condition now for 2 years and it really in not understood. Most people I talk to have never heard of it, so when I found this forum and so many people suffering like myself it was a God send. So hopefully I can gain some knowledge from other people and anyone panicking about the pain they are feeling and thinking its something bad, can take some reassurance from my story.
Does anyone feel the pain is in their back more then their chest area. And if anyone has any advice or anything, please do share with me.

My name is Reece, I have been suffering with costo for about 4 months now.
I am fit and healthy and before this condition I was exercising 3 times a day every day. I increased the intensity of my exercise and was pushing hard because I had my Royal Marines selection. I felt a pain in my sternum but as my selection was only a week away I decided to try and push through. This aggrivated the condition massivley and I have suffered for the last 4 months because of this.
Initially the pain was just in my chest and I went to see a physio, she tried to massage the rib area thinking that it was a pulled muscle in my chest. This aggrivated it further so I would not recommend sports massage.
After being aggrivated further the pain spread into my neck and back and so I looked for other help in the form of a chiropractor. Whithin 5 sessions he was able to dramatically reduce the back pain so that it is now only very mild.
Unfortunatly I do not have an answer for the chest pain. It is constant and wears you down. I have been sick some days because the pain is that intense. I have a very high tolerance for pain but this is definatly the worst pain I have ever felt.
I take fish oils most days but refuse to take anti-inflamatorys. I think that pain killers only mask the pain temporarily and by doing so with someone like myself will make it worse as I will then start to do more physical activity and aggrivate the condition further.
At my wits end with this whole thing. I am not even able to run, my fitness reduces by the day and if it carries on any longer my Royal Marines application will be cancelled.
As I have said all that has worked for me is the chiropractor to reduce the pain in the back. This can be expenisve, I amy try and osteopath next and maybe accupuncture.

I am a 52 years old male, and had a heart attack when I was only 39. I received 4 stents, and again almost 2 years ago they put me 2 more stents. Since I had heart attack, I was always feeling a faint pain in the back ground in the chest area, and itching sensation in the center of my chest. I was thinking it is related to my heart, and was making me very nervous and was going to emergency, and of course all the test was showing that I was not having heart attack, until recently when I told my cardiologist that I do not like to use the sit belt when I am driving because it induces pain, she realized that this pain is related to something else, and diagnosed me that I have costocho. Now it has been almost 6 months that the pain is very bad and it is unbearable and even gives me arrhythmia, I feel numbness in both lower parts of my legs. I tried diclofenac for sometimes but was not very helpful. Now I am using diclofenac as gel, and it is bit more helpful.
The pain is very random, sometimes in the morning it is worse, for example this morning I was not able to sleep. Just last week I did echo stress test and heart seems to be OK. When the pain is bad, I feel pain even in the muscle of my stomach, it is like that I did 100 pushups. I am not sure but I think when I have physical activities I feel better, since the characteristic of the pain is so random I can not conclude what is good or bad, I have also experience hot water bottle will help after a couple hours. Thanks a lot to all you, I found your comment very helpful, and I could identify myself to many of you.
