Hello,

I have a bad cough, It has been going on for quite a long time now. I am a busy woman so I find doctors appointments a problem to make. The cough is dry and causes me to have a feeling like my chest blocks and I cant breath. I noticed that I cough up yellow phlegm and the cough is very tireing. I cant sleep at night because of this cough and even when I try I sleep in a sitting position as lieing down causes a cough attack . I have had a endoscopy that came back fine. All they said was that my throat looks abit red. The stupid doctor told me that it could be stomach acid that causes this cough and told me to drink GAVISCON ! well this is still not helping me. My sister adviced that it could be a hayfever and that I should try some anti hestamines however that also is not helping.

Have any of you got some sort of ideas what the cause of this is?

Or maybe what I could do to settle it down ?

Hi sounds like the symptons i have mine has been going on for 2 months now coughing and throat clearing in the day not really at night time but in the morning coughing u phlem i usually have mucus and phlem in my nose aswell doctor told me its a post nasal drip which a chronic cough is a sympton of. Chronic cough is classed as anything lasting longer then 8 weeks.

But like you said it could also be caused by heart burn or hayfeaver.

Post nasal drip i believe is usually caused by a viral infection it should run its course .

Hi I was coughing for several months try a nasal decongestant and as your sister said antihistamines.

I eventually was referred to Ent who prescribed steroid nasal drops which I'm on perminantly and a hospital strength antihistamines. This keeps it all under control thank goodness. I was prescribed an ant acid for a time but this was stopped on finding out I didn't need it.

Could be rhinitis/ post nasal drip with possible allergies............try and get the drops & antihistamines from the chemist and try them if they don't work docs would be the next move.

Feel for you as it makes you feel miserable

    Good luck
