Hi paula. I suggest you see your doctor as soon as possible. I would doubt its the preds but get it checked out quickly just in case.

Thank you Tavido for your reply . I went to the doctors this morning I have to have a chest xray next week and I'm being put on the cancer path way within the next two weeks I've not long had a phone call from the doc telling me this as the doc I saw was a locum she went and had a discussion with a senior doc who advised to put me on the cancer path way what ever that means . Probably go see a consultant after my xray thank you once again much appreciated

That's good news Paula. Earlier this year I they found a patch on the lung after a chest infection I and went thru the same process, xrays and a Petscan. Luckily the patch went and I got the all clear but best not to leave it too long. Good luck.

Black blood is ‘old’ blood, but keep an eye on it.  I had heavy internal bleeding this time last year (bright red blood) and ended up in hospital for two weeks.  After a week or so the blood turned black and the doctors said “don’t worry, that’s old blood - get it out of your system”.

Thank you contance . I'm more inclined to think it could be ulcer or start of one as I get terrible acid reflux and gaviscon is no.help Thank you again Constance much appreciated

I too have chronic acid reflux and oesophagus problems.  I have been on stomach medicines for 10 years or more.  Gaviscon only helps if you have slight problems.  One thing I read recently was eat porridge (raw - about a desert spoonful) chew to a pulp, then swallow and, wonder of wonders, it works - amazing.   Better than chemicals any day.  Worth a try, but keep in close touch with your doctor.

      Regards from Constance.

As far as I am concerned coughing up blood is NEVER something to ignore and I am very pleased your GP is setting you on the pathway. All it is is a fast-track so you don't get lost in the system, just in case.

If you have really severe acid reflux gaviscon is simply not enough, especially when you are on pred. You should have been put on enteric coated pred or given omeprazole or ranitidine with the pred and if that didn't help referred to an expert. The PPIs don't work for some people (about a third) so something different is needed and a close look taken.

ThAnk you Eileen the doctor put me on gaviscon not long after I started on pred I was already on pantoprazol but my fault as I never took them regularly to start with until recently , today they put them up from 30mg to 40 mg . Thank you Eileen I will keep you informed as to how I get on

The reason I was on pantoprazol is 30 years ago I had a very bad car accident I tore my diaphragm and ruptured my stomach along with a lot of other things ,so that was the start of acid reflux thanks again Eileen

Think you should liaise with your doctor when this happens. Hope this is resolved for you satisfactorily. Good luck.

Paula, make sure your doctors know of any supplements you might be taking: NSAIDs, herbs or other so called "natural" products.

Way before pred I had terrible belly pain- no coughing up of blood. It turned out to be an Hpylori infection - treated with antibiotics. H pylori is the germ which causes most ulcers.

it was diagnosed by a gastroscope and stomach biopsy. It doesn't show up on a regular X-ray.
