Lately I've been coughing more and throughout the night the mucous is brownish. Any ideas?

    Hello Nancy

I have had brownish mucus in the past which  caused me to visit the doctor. I was given antibiotics which cleared it up. I still have mucus due to broncheactesis but it’s not brown. See what your doctor says. Good luck

Ditto what Marion said. Call your lung doc/nurse.

Sounds like an infection. A few years ago, I was coughing up dark mucus, turned out to be a fungal infection. In any case, as stated before, see your specialist.

If you can bring in a recent sample of the mucus, they can have it anyalized to see what is going on.

Isn't strange that it's clear during the day?

Not to my mind, but i'm not a doc. It's possible that what you get up during the day isn't much more than spittle and/or post nasal drip. If the brown stuff starts coming up after you lie down, at that point you may be getting positional drainage of lung gunk.

If it just starts coming up brown automatically at 9 p.m. without any exercise & without change in position, then I'm even more clueless than usual.
