Essentially it's Phlegm (can also be called Sputum), it's actually something that's fairly common in asthmatics. It's a substance that's created when there is inflammation in the lungs, which is basically what Asthma is (smoking, illness and other things can also cause it... and colour can vary). Just cough it up and get rid it.

Yes, it's mucus. If it's off white or clear in asthmatics it's taken as a sign of asthma, if it came up green or yellow it's a sign you may have an infection.

To clarify, phlegm and mucus are related, but not quite the same. Phlegm specifically originates in the lungs and is what gets coughed up. As above green or yellow is an indicator of infection (usually bacterial), opaque white tends to lean more towards a viral infection.
