Could coein cause acute pancretitis?

Hello Guys. I had acute pancreatitis during the summer of 2017 (June, 2017). Then I had another attack 4 days ago. The Doctors assumed that the first attack was due to alcohol and hence, I totally stoped consuming alcohol. But still I was attacked second time. I got appointtement after one month regarding further blood and imaging tests. At same time, I went to see a pancrease specialist. He requsted me what I have taken before the attacks, I replied Panacod (Paracetamol 500 mg and codein phosph. 30 mg). He then blamed the codein. Can any one comment on my situation? Thank you in advance!

Hi dink35744, wow, you had your Acute Pancreatic attack around the same time I had mine. Mine was July of last year. I would do some research on the Codeine and then get an appt. with him again and discuss what that research revealed to ya. I myself take Morphine 30mg and it so far has not caused me any problems. They treated me with that intraveinously as well when they hospitalized me for the Acute Pancreatitis and lord, it was a life saver, I was in so much pain! Whatever you find on the Codeine, you might ask if the Dr. can switch you to Morphine instead...and if he refuses because of this Opoid Craze that is scareing the Drs from treating their patients, invest into the time to find another Dr with a better bedside manner! Hope things get better for you soon. Im still recovering from my bout with the stuff from last July. Dont drink, smoke and stick with a bland diet for a while to give your Pancreas a rest. I feel for ya, this stuff sucks sad

Hi JoannaFMc. Thank you for your advice. It sad that we got this bad illness. I hope that you do all the best that It will never happen to you again. I got labappointement (CT and blood test and check if they can come up with what is going on.)after approximatly one month. The thing I did not mention to them about this panacod stuff. I will tell them when I see them next me. I just told the pancrease specialtiy that I took the panacod before both attacks and he said he the codiene in panacod can cause acute pancreatitis (I googled it and found out that one of the rare side effects of codiene is acute pancreatitis. But I found it diffucult to admit. Thank you any way and keep safe.

Good to hear you got the other tests done but I too had not known about that Codeine either for the fact it could cause the Acute Pancreatitis. I do hope they can give you something to replace that because the pain of this is almost unbearable. I hope I never ever get it again either, I had never even heard of it before I got it so when I was told thats what I had, I thought the worse, thinking it was some kind of cancer lol, it just as well may have been for the pain and disorientation I felt because of the pain. Hopefully you will not get another bout either and they will get to the bottom of things for you. Wishing you all the best and as much as pain free time as you can have.

I’m not certain if you’re aware but one acute pancreatitis attack can cause chronic pancreatitis. There is such a thing as medication induced pancreatitis but it normally stops when you stop taking the medication.  However, in some people, once you’ve had an acute attack you develop chronic pancreatitis. I don’t know if that’s what’s happening with you, I’m just letting you know it’s possible. I had what I now know were pancreatitis attacks throughout my life but my blood work never showed everything only my AST/ALT levels would rise. Long story short … it took my doctors over a year to diagnose me with Pancreas Divisum (congenital abnormality where you’re born with two pancreatic ducts that never fused together) which also caused me to get chronic pancreatitis. The only noninvasive test that really shows the pancreas is a MRCP.  That’s how my doctors where able to finally diagnose me. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

Dear Shortie79. Thank you for your reply. I am sorry that you have to deal with this illness. Let's hope that things will get better in the future. Yes, I tried to study the illness and I have some knowlege about it. I had no idea prior to these attacks. According to my previous image and lab results, there was no sign of calcification or symptom of chronic pancretities but As you know, It could be at early stage or some thing else. I have also appointement after one month with medical personells and I will have CT, blood tests etc. But for one what I found it diffcult is the codiene in the panacod is causing my attacs that is what the pancreasr specialist thinks. All the best wishes for you. Thanks!
