Could I have fractured anything after a fall?

So I had surgery to one of my tendons recently and unfortunately, while I was showering I slipped and pushed a bit of my full body weight on it before it gave away and I fell back.

I hit my outer foot on the side of the bathtub as I fell and despite the current pain being bearable and most of the swelling on my ankle has gone down, I now have a very prominent bump on the outer side of my foot. The location is around the base of the 5th metatarsal.

Is it worth it to go to the ER to get it checked out? I just generally dislike hospitals and despite some pain, I would think of fracture would feel pretty horrible no?

I don't know what that is but to be honest I would get it checked as it doesn't sound right. Just to be safe.

Better to be safe then sorry, so its probably best to get it checked. I am very stubborn and have a very high pain tolerance and once walked on a broken foot for 5 1/2 months before I broke it for a second time.

    Suzy,

Your concerns are understandable, as is your reluctance to get back into the clutches of hospitals and medics.

Only a set of x-rays could dispel any doubts of a fracture from your mishap. However, usually a fracture has some tell-tale signs and symptoms, including importantly an inability to put weight on affected foot. Other signs of a broken ankle can be severe pain, swelling, tenderness to touch, or bruising.

Advancing age, osteoporosis, and other conditions may increase likelihood of fractures from falls.

I'd recommend seeing a health care practitioner if you have any of the above and are still concerned.
