Could I have gilberts syndrome?

Hi all, new to this group and trying to find some answers.

I was admitted to hospital 2 months ago with severe stomach pain and jaundice. Had bloods taken, bilirubin was elevated so they done an ultrasound thinking I had gallstones. To cut a long story short my gallbladder, pancreas and liver looked fine and other blood tests came back OK except for the bilirubin. The pain was gone within a few days. Since then I have twice had the pain on my right side but very mild and the whites of my eyes have gone yellow on both occasions and suffering extreme fatigue. Every time this has happened I've been on my period. Could I possibly have GS?? No one else in my family has it that I know of and I'm 34 so surely a bit late for these symptoms as websites say its usually diagnosed in late teens /early twenties! Any reply would be hugely appreciated

Suggest you ask for clarification from your doctor. As far as I am aware the only test for GS is bilirubin level. I wasn't diagnosed until my 50's & then only by chance!

    Good luck.

Hi, this is how the hospital found out that I have GS.

    Blood test

Gilbert's syndrome can be determined by means of blood tests for the liver functions. In Gilbert's syndrome, only the bilirubin level is increased. The other liver functions are normal. There are many more, less harmless (liver) disorders in which the bilirubin level is increased. With these liver disorders, however, this is accompanied by an increase in several liver functions.

    DNA research

Gilbert's syndrome is a hereditary condition. The diagnosis can therefore also be made by means of hereditary research. This research is done on the basis of DNA in your blood. DNA is the genetic material that is present in all our body cells. Many hereditary diseases can be determined on the basis of DNA research.

I believe that there is now a genetic (blood) test you can do for gilberts.  My symptoms didn't show until I was around the same age, since then my older sister has also been diagnosed, but no other members in the family.  do some reading through the forum, you will need to make some dietary changes, some of it will be trial and error but you will find things that work for you.
