Could I have Haemochromatosis ????

Aunties on both mum and dad side of the family have Haemochromatosis. They are both from the West of Ireland.  I was born and raised in London. Last night a cousin said we should all get tested. When I look at the symptoms I have most of the, with the exception of irregular periods. BUT .... all blood tests always show I am low in iron so I assume you cannot have Haemochromatosis AND be low in iron or have I misunderstood how this works? Is there a different blood test to do for Haemochromatosis ? Many thanks for any help

    Hi Gerrymouse,

Only the dna test will show if you have the mutated gene. Many womenvonly show iron overload once periods stop. You probably know that it isn't a blood disorder but a metabolic disease/condition My suggestion would be to go to

https://haemochromatosis.org.uk/ there is a wealth of accurate information including who should be tested and how. The gastrologist /heptology specialist told me to join and if it is not there it possibly is incorrect information. P.s. I was diagnosed a year ago and at this moment I am anemic. So yes you can be both. Good luck.
