Could I have passed a gallstone and had pancreatitis?

I was having bad upper abdominal pain around my right side ribs and chest discomfort/pressure. It seemed to happen an hour or more after eating. I ended up feeling incredibley ill for a couple weeks and looked like absolute death. I thought I looked yellow. I had no appetite and was extremely bloated.

The pain started to get better and I got my color back. However, I Started having sharp left pain. I also had night sweats. I was worried I was getting sick again.

Three days after the left pain, I went to my Dr. and he Suspected gallstones. I felt much better, the pain was much less, but still there. I got blood tests which were fine except 3x Lipase and slightly increased Amylase-which I was told indicated mild pancreitis.

I never drink now and years ago I only drank seldomly.

Two more days later, I got an ultrasound and it showed no gallstones, but that I had a dilated common bile duct (10mm.) It hurt a lot when the tech ran over my gallbladder! My lipase and Amylase were down to normal. I still had some right pain and left pain.

The doctor said I could have passed a stone and sent me to a specialist.

However, the specialist said there was never a gallstone or pancreitis and if I continued to have pain, I should see a psychologist! It seems nuts to me! I asked about my increased Lipase/amylase levels and dilated bile duct (tests that were run because of my specific pain...) but he said no gallstones showed up, so it was insignificant and that the pancrease levels weren't significant either.

I feel like that Dr.'s dismissive ness is very sketchy. Do you think it's possible I caught the tail end of mild pancreitis after a passed stone? Is it really normal to have those abnormal test results?

It seems to me that the specialist you saw wasn't much of a doctor.  I would suggest that you go back to your GP and tell him that the specialist was dismissive and ask a referral to another. Sounds as though he is too full of himself to care whether someone is ill or not!

A conscientious GI doctor would have ordered more tests, such as a colonoscopy and endoscopy, a HIDA and a CT scans to try to determine what is going on with you.  Your test results need further investigation.

Best of luck to you, and please let me know how you get on! xx

Hi Kate, I agree with Lynda go back to your normal doctor and asked to be referred to a different specialist as his remarks are very unprofessional. It maybe that something has gone on but has now cleared, are you still having pain? I know of people that have passed gallstones so its not unheard of. If you had gallstones it may have scarred your gallbladder hence the pain. It does sound as though you had something as being yellow generally indicates a blockage.

Go back to your doctor and let us know how you get on. The treatment you received was awful and as Lynda said they should be doing other tests rather than just an ultrasound. Take care x

I have chronic pancreatits and you don't need a shrink! Yes you had pancreatits as your labs reflect that. Your cbd dilation could of been from a stone or from pancreatits. I'd get it re he led in a few months and if you get pain agsin get lipase drawn sgain. See another surgeon that guy is an idiot

Thanks for the feedback. In case anyone is curious, after a year of pain, illness and more Pancreatitis, a Dr. finally investigated further.

I have stones in my bile duct which were likely causing the Pancreatitis and the dilated duct (blockage.) I’m getting them removed with an ERCP. They almost certainly are from my Gallbladder, so I’ll probably need that removed, too.

Hopefully they’ll let you know. The test that showed the bile-duct stones was an endoscopic ultra-sound. The stones didn’t show up on a regular ultra-sound.
