Could it be due to herpes or nair?

Posted , 4 users are following.

I used nair not too long ago and it started off as a bump and i kept scratching/rubbing it and then it felt swollen but i didn't think anything of it. Then it started off small and ulcer like and now its more open probably due to my underwear constantly rubbing against it. I was using aloe-vera gel and it calmed down a lot and then i stopped and thats when it got worse so i went to a NP and she took one look and claim it was herpes. I was not able to get a test till later on this week. Does this look like herpes or possibly chemical burn/irritation due to nair? Sometimes i would get cysts after using nair but if i leave it alone itll go away. but i just want to at least know what others think till i can get testedimageimage

The pictures are pretty blurry so its hard to tell, but it looks like it could be herpes.

However, if youre getting swabbed more than 72 hours after the sores showed up, you're likely to get a false negative. Its important to get a swab within 72 hours. If you miss that window, youll have to wait 4 months and then request an IGG type blood test. Before that your body will not have built up enough antibodies against the virus to result in a positive test, meaning another likely false negative.

what if the nurse claim theres a chance that i already had it for a long time?

Its quite possible. HSV can lay dormant for month, if not years, however, I'm not sure how she would determine that based on one outbreak.

Some people don't have very severe outbreaks.

You could go for a blood test (specifically IGG), and see. but if it comes back negative, retest in 4 months.

okay thank you and if its dormant is that probably how nobody had caught it ? I tried asking the nurse and got yelled at.

That would just be luck, or it has been passed on and they simply havent had symptoms, and without it being tested for on regular STD screenings, they wouldn't know their status.

HSV can be passed on when the virus is dormant, and no outbreak is present, it's called "shedding", although the chances are higher with an active outbreak.

With HSV, you never know when this shedding is happening.

HSV is however more easily transmitted by men to women, than women to men, so that would be another factor.

If you decide on suppressive therapy (its just a once a day pill), it lowers the risk of transmission in women down to something like 1% when using a condom as well!

Im also very sorry you got yelled at. Thats completely unacceptable! Being told you may have herpes is a pretty hard pill to swallow at first, no medical professional should make you feel worse about having questions!

The nurse who diagnosed me spent 10ish minutes with me just talking while i cried and explaining everything to me. It made the news a little easier and I can't imagine how I would have reacted if she had blown me off and gotten irritated with questions.

Feel free to message me as well if you have any other questions or just want to talk.

The diagnosis can be pretty hard emotionally, and i know having someone with it helped me cope and feel less like an odd ball.

question, if it is dormant will/can it still pop up on a blood test?

thank you so much and thank you for explaining it. Not everyone has knowledge when it comes to std's/sti's so it means a lot that youre informing all of us!

I was very unknowledgeable on it before my diagnosis, which is when i dove into research lol Helped calm me almost. Im more than happy to be able to spread that knowledge!

To answer your earlier question, yes, even when the virus is dormant, as long as its been 4 months since exposure, you'll get a positive result.

The blood test doesnt test for the virus, it tests the antibodies, since herpes isnt found in the blood (it's in the nervous system). So as long as your body has built up enough antibodies to fight the virus, youll get the positive result.

HSV can also still be transmitted when its dormant, its called shedding.

So, don't think because youre not having an outbreak, you cant pass it on to someone
