Could my back pain be from atorvastatin

I have been on atorvastatin for years, starting with 10 mg back in the '90s now up to 80 mg since I had a stent placed in my LAD in 2009. I am in my mid 60s but have always been very active, going to the gym, etc. the past 6 mos. I have increasingly suffered from severe back aches with it traveling down my buttocks down to my ankle. It is now so severe that it hurts to stand any length of time and walking in the grocery store bothers me as well. My PCP gave me muscle relaxers & pain meds which don't help at all. PT for a month hasn't helped either. Today I went to an orthopedist who suggests with permission from my cardiologist that I stop my statin for 3 weeks since all x-rays were negative. I am hoping this is the culprit bc the pain is debilitating and my summer has been limited to staying home.

The lower back pain is an ongoing problem. I think that most had not been caused by statins, but they definitely did not help.
Most people, myself included, did complain about muscle weakness/cramp when on statins. If you have back problems and then your muscle structure starts to deteriorate suddenly, it should not be 'rocket science' to deduce that this will have an adverse effect on your back problems

I basically 'demanded' an Xray of both my spine and my hip.
They showed that a) I have some calsificatin in my lower back b) I have a slight deformity in my spine.
I have now been attending a pain management clinic and had some injectins, which have helped. The consultant there told me that I need a total assessment of my hip/pelvis and should ask my GP to arrange for one.
I am concerned, that after 3 years of complaining about the same pain, no real help was offered to me freely. I am of the opinion that GP's are instructed to 'fob people off', whenever possible and just tell them to exercise and/or lose weight.
I think that nobody should be ignored for that long with the amount of pain I experienced, and that nobody should have to 'fight' to get treatment that is available.

You`ve confirmed what I already believed in that the statin I was taking was causing the severe pain that seemed to come out of nowhere. I was originally prescribed 10mg Artovastatin, along with blood pressure and aspirin tablets when I was diagnosed as diabetic 16 years ago. I didn`t take the Artovastatin as I wanted to try and control my cholesterol myself, but was pressured to take the aspirin and blood pressure pills to avoid the risk of a stroke.
Last summer I suffered a Cranial Palsy which left me with diplopia (double vision) and had to undergo a barrage of tests to confirm that it was not a stroke. Thankfully all the tests came back clear and now, almost a year on, I have recovered the majority of my eyesight. However I was advised to take the Artovastatin and being scared regarding the risk of stroke, I foolishly started taking them. However for some unknown reason the dosage had been increased by my GP from 10mg to 80mg. Unfortunately because I couldn`t really see properly, I only realised the change about three months ago. By this time I had been told by my mother that I had gained a lot of weight (which I had realised) although I hadn`t changed my eating habits, and also that my diabetes was out of control and was not only spiking but also dropping. I arranged to get myself checked out, but the excuse I was given was that I was gaining weight because I wasn`t eating enough !!! The checks at the clinic revealed that I had gained over a stone in weight, but she would not commit to any treatment so I`ve now got an appointment with the Diabetic specialist as Artovastatin causes problems with diabetes along with other health issues. I`m currently waiting to see a rheumatologist but this constant pain is making my life an absolute misery. Everyone`s comments on the pain they`re suffering is exactly what I`m going through. I`m so relieved to know I`m not crazy and that other people share the same experience. All I can hope for is that in time I may actually be able to walk without pain or shambling like some decrepit old woman when I`m only 48. I`ve been off the statin for almost 3 weeks so it`s early days yet, but just knowing it`s not in my head has made such a different.

Hello. I found this forum while looking for answers to my back pain. I am currently taking Lipitor and thought that it might be the culprit. I see you went through this experience years ago. I was wondering how things came out and what you found out about your experience with it. Any light you could shed on the subject would be appreciated. Thank you -James

I didn't see any reference to a MRI of your back. It can find things an x-ray cannot. I was wondering if they had ever treated your pain with prednisone or other glucocorticoids. You could can get stenosis caused by epidural fat created by the prednisone. I ended up with severe stenosis caused by prednisone which created spinal epidural lipomatosis. The x-rays don't show the severe stenosis at all.

It sounds like sciatica to me. It can be caused by a herniated lumbar disc, but more often it is spasmed muscles in the buttocks. Especially the piriformis muscle, which the sciatic nerve runs through on most people. I suggest a good massage therapist.

I have also taking Atorvastatin for 4 years and recently have been experiencing sharp back and shoulder pain and acute hip pain. All three come and go but at times restrict movement. Statins are highly toxic and personally I am not convinced of the cholesterol theory. Cholesterol is required for many functions in the body and blocking it does not sound right. Plaque build up is a problem though and if cholesterol is partly to blame for that then there is a problem. I am having a break from my statin for a while to see if the pain goes away. You are not alone !

Hi all
only just found this discussion; wondering if anyone can help?
I had a suspected TIA (disagreement between the consultants in A&E; stroke specialist "definite TIA" A&E consultant "Atypical symptoms, probably a severe Migraine) last November (6 months ago or so) and was put on Clopidogrel, blood thinner, and Atorvastatin 80mg. My GP says he doesn't believe the Pharma hype about Statins, but because statistically they reduce the risk of a second TIA or stroke by 90+% that he recommended I should go on them.
Felt listless, depressed, and lethargic within a week or two, which I initially put down to the after effects of the TIA/Migraine. Symptoms continued, so I asked for a change of statin and he prescribed Simvastatin instead. I'm just recovering from a massively painful four week gout attack (I've previously had gout, once or twice a year which has cleared up in 2-3 days) only after a five day Steroid course.
Anyone else had gout that they can attribute to Statins please?
