Could my medication be making me worse?

I have been diagnosed with Eustachian Tube Dysfunction FINALLY after 3 years of annoyance in my left ear. The doctor isn't actually sure why I have it because I have such a low BMI so he thought it more likely that I would have Patulous eustachian tubes. He prescribed me Avamys nasal spray and Betahistine tablets. I also have a large amount of fluid trapped in my middle ear sad I ran out of Avamys and in those 5 days feel that my ear might have been a little better. Now I am back using the Avamys the bubble feeling in my ear feels much worse. Could it be possible that the Avamys is making my ear worse? Has anyone come accross this? I was due a check up yesterday because I fly next Tuesday but the specialist cancelled. He was possibly going to fit a grommet so I am gutted that I didn't get to see him. Does anyone know if this stuff eventually gets sorted? sad

The only sure way to know is to stop takiong the medication long enough to find out. But I was taking medication for my blocked ear and it became unblocked when I stopped my medication. Then when I started it again the ear got blocked again. It is different for everyone but with me the medication makes it worse and also gave me other horrid side effects. Have they tried mucodyne, some give that for it?

I didn't want to play around with my medication too much before flying but something is telling me to just stop with the Avamys. I havn't heard of mucodyne before but I see it's for vicious mucus which sounds ideal. Is this something that a Doctor has to prescribe?

HI Alison. Yes a doctor has to prescribe it. But I have known lots of people who take it and most doctors would probably let you try it. It only has side effects if you take if for along time, which YOU would not need to.

It might also be worth asking where the blocked ear came from? In my ca\se and quite often it is from silent acid reflux so if you deal with that it stops it happening again.

It's taken me pushing to get this far. For so long they've said that nothing is wrong. It took one of four specialists to keep a camera inside my head for some time for him to see it. I feel like the more info I walk in with the less likely I am to get any help. It just keep getting reffered. I don't understand why they can't just slice the eardrum and let the fluid out but apparently that's old school andn isn't done now.

    Hi Alison,

Sorry to hear you are suffering from etd. How did this start, was it an infection, a flight, sinus problems or just out of the blue.

The fact you have a large amount of fluid suggests a grommit might help.

What symptoms do you have? Etd can cause many and they are often different from one person to another.

I have had this problem for almost 3 months and it is driving me mad. Mine was caused by a loud bang.

Hope you get some help soon

I really don't know what triggered it off. I have since had a grommit fitted but this has not released any fluid at all. I'm trying to get a check up but not getting very far :-/
