could my son have svt?

My 8 year old son has been to our hospital as he has 'episodes' where his heart will start racing to about 200 beats per minute, he is aware of this and you can see his heart beating but he has no other side effects. This year he has had 4 epiodes that last about 20mins but last year during the summer this was happening 3 - 4weeks sometimes twice a day and lasting up to half an hour. He has had an ecg and is due for an ultrasound on his heart this week but the doctors can find nothing wrong. Someone has told me about svt, which I had never heard of and no-one has ever mentioned to us. My follow up appt isnt until July, should I wait til then or bring this up before then, all advice gratefully received. We are quite concerned that they cannot find anything wrong but they do not seem to be.

Thanks

Sarah

How can they say they can find nothing wrong?

If your son has heartbeats 200bpm .....thats not normal. He is in SVT! My 13year old daughter collapsed at home in july saying her heart was racing, she couldnt breath and slowly she turned grey, and was totally exausted,i rang for ambulance and knew something wasnt right, thank god i did as she wouldnt be here now if i hadnt. Her heartbeat was 250bpm and getting worse. After being in/out hospital countless times since then she had the ablation 2 weks ago. They have been treating her for asthma all these years when she couldnt breath since she was little instead of a simple echo and ecg which would have detected she has WWP.

Demand echo and ecg test pleeeeeeeeeeease x

Thanks for your reply, my son has an appointment on Wednesday when they will do an ultrasound on his heart but looking at the info on this site we dont hold out much hope that it will show anything. He has had an ecg at the hospital and seen 2 consultants both of who could find nothing wrong and said it was nothing to worry about, these were peadiatric consultants though. When he has an 'episode' he doesnt feel feint, dizzy or out of breath etc but he does rub his chest although this is more out of frustration as his heart is racing so fast it feels 'uncomfortable', on average it lasts about 20 mins and is 200 - 220 beats per minute. He could be at school or at home, playing or sitting about and it will start suddenly, he carries on whatever he is doing and then tells us once it stops and we keep a diary of it but there is no pattern to when it happens that we can see. Whenever he sees a doctor he is fine and his heartbeat is normal which doesnt really help us! We are not sure where to go from here, as I said before it has never been mentioned by the hospital

Hi, I hope the consultation is satisfactory but if still no luck my advice is that next time your son has one of these attacks you should call for an ambulance. They will at least link him to an ECG and you will get a basic recording of his heart beat to aid a diagnosis (if it lasts long enough). With luck they can get him to A and E in time for a full ecg trace to be recorded, without which it will be tricky to get a diagnosis. The down side is that this could be a bit scary for your son and you may want to avoid that trauma. The alternative would be a 24 hr holter monitor which records his heart over that time or an event monitor which he can set off once he gets an attack. The key thing is to get a full ecg trace for a cardiologist to examine. It may be that they find an svt that is easily treatable.

Good luck with whatever you decide, I hope you can get this sorted soon.

    Cheers,

    Alex

Think Alex is right, although it can be very upseting and scary for your son as well as yourself i think you need to call an amblance without delay the moment he feels an attack. If i hadnt when my daughter fell ill she would still be suffering now or worse!!

Like i said before they never picked up on her having anything wrong although she had been born with the problem they treated her for asthma untill she collapsed at home.

    Good luck

    Hi Sarah,

whats happening to your son happened to myself. Im 19 and i had SVT since i was 10 but they did not diagnose it until i was 14, because whenever i was at the hospital and they did an ecg or echo i wasn't actually in an svt attack, so could never detect it. which meant they just didnt know what it was until my mum took me to hospital one time as soon as one of the attacks started. So they finally detected it on the ecg and diagnosed me with SVT. My heart used to race up to 210 bpm! i could feel it, i used to get dizzy and have to lay down, and you could also see it beating.

So my advice is as soon as he gets one of these attacks again, call an ambulance and they will put him on the monitor straight away and pick up whats wrong.

    Hope this helps. Charley
