Could this be acute pancreatitis?

Hi,

I'm a 21 year old girl, and lately I've been having more and more upper abdominal pains, usually straight after eating greasy foods. It also radiates to my back so much that it often hurts my back even more than my stomach. It may last hours or just half an hour, and then I feel fine. It's not so bad that I can't do anything but it's extremely uncomfortable.

I've had sludge but it seemed like I didn't have any left a few months ago. Though in the blood test I had done at that same time my direct bilirubin was high. I've also already had a gallstone a year ago.

I have frequent nausea but I've had untreatable gastritis for like 7 years.

Do you think this could be inflammation of the pancreas or something? I saw that sludge can lead to that.

I'm just trying to understand my pains.

Thanks, and sorry for any English mistakes

Hi LyKeane, you should ask your doctor about this especially given your history.  There are meds called PPI's that can help with the nausea, I'm surprised you're not on them for your gastritis.

I'm also surprised to hear you eat fatty foods given your gastritis and gall bladder issues. Eat a low fat diet and you may find the pain and the nausea improves greatly or even goes away.  Much better than taking painkillers which can exacerbate the gastritis.

Your doctor can order tests to see if there's any pancreas damage, a CT or endoscopy, however you have to do your part to help prevent the situation from getting worse.  You're an adult LyKeane you have to accept responsibility for your day to day.

Decisions relating to your diet require discipline.  Given your history I'd have thought you'd have a diet plan to manage the gastritis you've had for 7 years, you'll need one if you have pancreatitis.

Please see your doctor and talk through all of this with him/her, and don't leave until you understand how to manage.  The issues you mention, gall bladder, gastritis and possible pancreatitis can each cause very serious problems so you really need to understand the possible repercussions if not managed well.  Your English is fine. Good luck.

Find a pancreatic specialist to be sure.  If it is your pancreas you don’t want to let it go untreated.  I spent 3.5 weeks in ICU almost losing my life. Then a week in the hospital.  I have had 6 procedures to drain the  necrosis from my pancreas.  I lost 40  lbs and am just starting to stop losing my hair.

Take symptoms serious but don’t panic until you are sure.

Hoping the best for you honey !!  Keep us posted.
