Hello escot, I often suffer from pain in my shoulders and shoulder blades, but only if I do too much physical work. My PMR pain is currently well managed and the pain I do suffer from is a different sort of pain and within 2 days of the over exertion the pain normally is gone. However, when I say over exertion, pre PMR the work would have been easy peasy and I would not have experienced any pain. Regards, christina

A shoulder impingement and PMR are two different problems. I am assuming that you have had the impingement diagnosed by someone who is competent to do so.

Can the impingement be relieved by a surgical procedure ? Can physical therapy help increase your range of motion in the shoulder without aggravating the impingement? Might help the impingement too. Is there a rotator cuff tear? A lot of questions.

First, stop doing what aggravates it. Use an ice pack on the sore area. Keep your arm moving in as full a range of motion as possible. Shoulders "freeze" up in a couple of weeks if they are not used.

I have to take weeks or several months off periodically to let my shoulder calm down. I aggravate it by playing tennis. I have a lot of aches at 75 but at least my PMR is currently under control.

It was first thought that I had PMR but a bone scan revealed CPPD,and I am taking medication form this, which does seem to be helping, My shoulder and arm problems are a different issue. I went for a scan re my shoulder and was told that I had an impingement and the shoulder was iinjected I was told that I would hear a pop when the injection went in which I did, and was told that the impingement had been released, I was then told to have some Physio which I did, and within couple of weeks the pain  has returned with avengence and I seen to be back where I started because of other health conditions I can only take paracetamol, which does not really take the pain away.and I find it impossible to lay down to sleep at night and periods in the day that are very painful

That is just one way to deal with CPPD and as Charlie says you need to tell the doctors the injection hasn't done the trick. If you don't tell them they will think it worked and everything is fine.

Hi escot, if you do not actually have PMR and your shoulder problems have been diagnosed as something else, you may be better off getting your post onto a different forum and that way you may very well get more of a response. Just a thought. Regards, christina

The calcium pyrophosphate deposits are a different burden than PMR and you probably should seek help in another forum as Christina suggests. You should also let your Orthopedic doctor know that his injection did not help.

    Hello,

My PMR pain and stiffness floats around, with the majority in the same areas that you talked about. I have kept records as to what bothers me and the type of execise I did the same day. So far, after almost two years of suffering, I cannot come up with any correlation between the two. At this moment I am on 10mg of prednisone and "very" slowly reducing. Still having pain, but it is manageable.

I exercise frequently (upper and lower body) whenever I feel good and so far the pain does not match up with the type of exercise I have done.

I recently went on a hoilday where I only walked, with no upper body exercises, and for the two weeks I had nothing but chest, shoulder and upper back (rhomboid area) pain.

The upper body pain affects my ability to push and lift items, sneeze and take deep breaths of air.

I can't speak for others as everybody is different.

So far I have tried Acupuncture, Bowen therapy, Physiotherapy, Active Release (with great pain), Massage therapy, and Yoga. Nothing has helped, other than hot showers and sauna time, but only for a short duration.

I am contemplating having a Hyperbaric session as many high level athletes have had this done with seemingly good results. I still need some more investigation though.

    Cheers,

    Shawn
