Crazy Weight Gain???

Posted , 2 users are following.

I keep hearing it's a myth that taking hormones will cause weight gain. But I have really low progesterone and when I took extra (natural compounded pills) per my doc I put on like 20 pounds in 2 weeks!!! Especially in my middle and I can't get it off. It doesn't seem like taking hormones to offset what your low in balances you and makes you lose weight. I've also heard other woman have experienced similar weight gain. I don't know what to do. I went off the hormones but still have a ton of middle weight I can't get rid of as well as giant boobs and weight all over. But mostly middle. And I eat low carb and not much.

I only have to use oestrodiol and have no problem with it causing extra weight. I think progesterone is the problematic hormone. Some may disagree. Are you using progesterone for menopause symptoms? or something else?

20 pounds in 2 weeks sounds more like fluid retention and you should be able to find treatment for that. I have recently found myself developing bloat. I went in search of everything available to reduce it. All being herbal supplements, etc. But a medication called Motillium is most effective. It increases motility of food from the stomach along the digestive tract. I also eliminated any gas forming foods from my diet.

I had been taking GABA, a body building type product while I was building up with bloat. I stopped taking it to see if it was a cause. My bloat started reducing and I lost weight but I was worried about losing muscle so I started taking GABA again. The bloat returned, so I stopped taking GABA and now motility is working again.

So you will have to work out by trial and error what is causing your problem. You may have to slowly decrease your progesterone till you have enough to stop break through bleeding. More unnecessary progesterone is not the answer.

Sugar type foods and starchy carbs cause fat around the middle, and I eliminate as much as I can, only weakening when someone puts a home baked goodie in front of me. I can't be rude, can I?

Hi I have always eaten paleo and low carb. No sugar etc. For decades. So its not my diet. Maybe you are right it is just progesterone. I took it because they told me mine was crazy low. That's what happens in peri-menopause. Maybe I need to take it with estrogen? They said my estrogen was "normal for my age" whatever that means. I'm 47. It's definitely not fluid retention. It's hard fat and I've tried diuretics.

Hi Sakura, I did expect it to be fluid because it seems extreme to put on about 20 pounds of fat in two weeks.

With oestrogen, 'normal for your age' may not be right for you. I don't know about peri-menopause, having had to go straight into surgical menopause and I was implanted with oestradiol pellet at same time.

Another dr suggested I use progesterone for 'balance'. It was the worst time ever as it is an oestrogen antagonist and put me back into menopause symptoms. When I worked out it was the progesterone, I went off it and I am still trying to get my oestrogen right. My body requires a lot of oestrogen.

I meant to add that it could be to your advantage to do more reading on the subject of peri-menopause so that you are armed with correct information when you next visit your dr.
