Creams for scars on hips

Hi hippies.

I would be grateful for any advice on creams or treatment for the scars following my TLHR which was  3 weeks ago. Feeling pretty tight but clean and no infection, redness. Any suggestions please ? Best wishes to you all.

I was told baby lotion was the best to use at first because it has no additives, if its okay for babies, its okay for hippies as well.  Don't know whether it helps the scar fade, but it makes skin feel more flexible and soft.  Anyway that is what I used for 6 weeks or so and then went onto a cheaper version of bio oil.  Good luck with yours.

    Hi Kevin

I used Bio oil from about two weeks (or after staples/stitches removed) which can be quite expensive but a little goes a long way and also used a specialist cream called Kelocote (very expensive in a tiny tube) but was worried I would get a keloid scar as I did once before. Aqueous cream is also good from your local chemist and not expensive.

    Best wishes

I realise this is contradictory to some, but I have had three independent professionals warn me against using Bio Oil, saying it's unnecessary, ineffective and expensive.

I've tried several different products and think the best are 1) pure argan oil 2) coconut oil and 3) Topricin.

I was also warned against using anything highly scented, which ruled out essential oils for me.

Hiya, thanks for advice. I've just used Johnson Baby lotion so far....appears to be helping. Stick to that now.

      Cheers

Experts will never agree.. the surgeon told my friend after her 2 knee replacements to use Lavendar cream.... and her recovery was amazing with no stiffness or hardness of tissue around the op site.  I too had excellent results.  If scar is healed then then scented oils/creams etc will not harm.  I think too it is also about the massaging of the area

      Hi Sylvia,

After great advice from other hippies I will tomorrow start by buying some Johnson baby lotion, some lavender then bio lotion and see if that can ease the stretching irritation around the scar. Will let you know how I get on. Otherwise.....you feel ok at this stage ? Thoughts and best wishes to you and any other questions I can help you with from my experience now 3 weeks post op.

Hi Kevin Yes I think i shall get some bio , having goggled the benifts it cant do any harm . Im still doing ok thankyou , a few bad days earlier in the week & a bit teary but reading comments from others it seems i am infact normal ! I also im worried about the hobble ha ha I was discharged very quickly from hospital with no appoinments with anybody , i think I will get an appointment for 6 weeks with the consulatant ....quite poor really after such a big op. I am still very numb around the scar area & it seems to pull but all in all I think I can manage its just 2 weeks since the op & I have come a long way.

      Best wishes to you Sylve

      Sylvia, fellow hippie,

We have both experienced the same post op hospital care...ie. your on your own except phone this number...but not get through. This forum has helped so much, so thankyou everyone.

Also your hip sensation same as mine, very uncomfortable, so plenty of lotion etc to go on.

I am this week going to look around my locality for aqua treatment as others on forum are benefitting from it. Otherwise be paddling sessions in the Thames Estuary. Gulp. Have you thought of pool therapy ?

      Have a lovely Sunday.

Hi Kevin and too many fellow Hippies...it is a common theme that you have the op and then for a vast majority you are "left to fend for yourself".... e are lucky to have the internet and this forrum.. how would we manage withut it  and what about others who perhaps are still struggling along and "alone"...  If there were more reg follow ups, perhaps I would have been treated sooner than 4 months flwg muscle strain on op hip side and hence be back to normal life sooner.  I also was a "nagger", so what /where would I be now IF I hadn't nagged and complained and insisted for something to "be done".  Even so "urgent list" turned out to be a 6 - 8 week wait list!

Hi Kevin Yes I am using the Bio Oil , it was an offer at a local chemist £5.95 for 100 ml & told it last ages , used it for 2 days now & it dosent sting but I cant say that it has stopped the tight pulling feeling that I have ? Day 18 now & I have removed all dressings and butterfly stiches & all looks ok but still very dumb & my operated leg is most deffo longer about 2 cm , I do hope this improves .

I also hope your baby lotion is making a differnce & you now have a baby soft thigh & butt :-)

Ha ha.....what they putting in that lotion of yours, not rubbing but knocking back a sip or two.  Good news that op wound is looking good, sure the extra 2cm will rectify itself. Everything else in your recovery going to plan ?

have you tried ice?  I thought the same as you (I am still using the bio-oil and it is a great help) .... I mentioned to my PT that the skin felt tight and she said that is due to slight swelling (looks fine to me ....smile)

the icing does help a lot to take away the tightness
