Crohns in the mouth

Posted , 4 users are following.

For a while now I have been trying to get a current flare up under control. I am currently taking prednisone and I am having 6 weekly infusions of infliximab. All my symptoms have cleared up, no stomach pain, no diarrhoea etc. However I have many painful ulcers and sores in my mouth, it sometimes gets to the point where my face looks visibly swollen. Has anyone ever experienced the mouth ulcers with no other symptoms? Or does anyone know if there is anything my specialist can give me. I have been to my GP before and he gave me a mouthwash which only slightly took away the pain for a short period of time.

You may have a nutritional deficiency contributing to your oral symptoms.

Id go and see your dentist, and they may recommend either a different mouthwash or advise blood tests

Pred can cause ulcers and often does.

Salt water mouthwash, warm, can help heal mouth ulcers.

Pred gave me nasty oral thrush.

I have had my share of mouth problems and they can take a while to heal. I have been on a Steroid for ten years and it has not caused any mouth problems. It can cause Thrush if you are prone to it and on a high dose, but it is probably the combination of the two drugs. Once you are able to stop the Prednisone it may clear as your immune system won't be as impaired. It also can be due to vitamin defficency. Hang in there, it sounds like the worst of it is gone for now.

Hi Aimee, having a sore mouth is awful because you can't even enjoy the moment of eating food even if you know it can cause you issues a few hours on! I suffered for many years with a sore mouth although it has improved at the moment. I had very low iron levels which I had infusions for & I think that was one factor. I now have vit B12 injections too. At one point I had oral steroids to treat the mouth ulcers & sores which I had to move around the affected patches until dissolved. They were horrid but did help. One major thing has been toothpaste. I couldn't clean my teeth without tears streaming down my face as toothpaste burned my mouth. The vast majority of toothpaste has a detergent SDS in it which is known to cause irritation in some people. Some sensodyne ones however don't. In addition I have found a kids gentle mint sensodyne that is not too minty. It now means I can clean my teeth thoroughly & is much gentler on my mouth. Worth a try, hope this helps.
