Cruciate Ligament Damage

Hello, on the eleventh of this month i had an accident on my motorcycle, i slipped on some oil outside a garage as i was stopping at a roundabout, only doing about ten miles an hour. I hit the floor on my right hand side and travelled underneith the bike for about a metre before it stopped, my right knee had been trapped between the bike and the road and i found it difficult to stand afterwards. I thought this was just some bruising because of the obvious trauma i would have suffered.

Once people had helped me and my bike off the road and i got home i put peas on my leg after noticing how swollen it had gotten and after about an hour my mum decided i needed to go to the hospital.

When i got to the hospital i had an xray and was told i may have a fracture but needed to come back the next day once the swelling went down slightly to see a fracture specialist, he moved my leg about a bit and said i don't have a fracture but i have very likely torn my cruciate ligament so i'm waiting for an MRI of my knee.

I'm only seventeen and i'm scared, i know if i've damaged it i'll need surgery and then i'll have to be in a cast for 6 weeks or more and then start an incredibly long recovery process, i'm worried i'm going to be stuck with a limp for the rest of my life or suffer with pain when i walk like i am currently, i also don't fancy having to spend my eighteenth birthday wearing a cast or recovering in hospital.

Over the last eighteen months i've had a never ending cycle or problems and i just don't seem to be getting a break from anything and it's running me down, not to mention i now can't ride my motorcycle which is something i would do to releave myself if i was stressed or needed to get out for a little bit, that's the reason i am more worried about this than most people would be, i've never had surgery or anything before so i'm very very scared about it all.

If anybody has expierienced this can i just have some advice please?

Is the surgery safe? What are the risks? How long will i be in a cast afterwards? How long do i need to stay in hospital? And more importantly, how long will i have to spend in physio and whatnot trying to recover from it?

Thank you for any replies, i really do appreciate it

I don't know nothing about your specific injury.  My advice would be to seek good medical attention....get a second opinion if necessary, do what the doctors say, try to be patient as most injuries surgeries take longer to heal than we want, and stay positive.  I'm sure it will heal, you are young and strong....oh yeah try not to worry.

If it is indeed torn you have no choice but to have it fixed and go through the planned recovery program. I know its hard for you now but at 17 you will heal quickly and only a very brief piece of your young life will be consumed with this. I doubt if you will have a limp. I was in therapy with a 20 year old university basketball player. She had a major ACL tear. They had to take her from the court on a gurney as she was in so much pain she couldnt bear weight of any  amount. I ran into 6 months later and she was planning on being back on the court going full tilt when the season started in 3 months. She had to do major rehab as they basically had to rebuild her knee. You'll be fine but you'll have to do exactly as you are told or youay never get back on that bike again. Good luck

Oh what a shame, you poor thing, its bad enough when your older but for this to happen when your young and want to be "normal" no wonder its worrying you. I have no experience of this procedure but others have told me its usually done with keyhole surgery and the reuperation time is fairly quick, lets hope thats the case with you. Dont worry too much about something that may not happen, get as much info as you can and dont be afraid to ask the doctors its ok to be scared really it is. Good Luck. smile

hi..... you do need to have it seen to... better to have it done now than try to keep going on it and do more damage.... If you do need surgery and you are young , strong and fit.... your recovery should be quite quick.... look at the footballers who have this type of injury.... don'tworry about the actual surgery... nowadays it's very safe... you will be well looked after and they will make sure you have plenty of pain relief afterwards... do all your physio... and heed medical advice. .. best of luck... ..

I've been to the hospital, unfortunately i have to wait four to six weeks to get an MRI, i currently have a splint and the blood swelling is reducing but causing a lot more pain now there's nothing essentially padding my kneecap from moving too much

Can you not go back to A&E    and tell them you are in so much pain...you must be frustrated and wondering what you should or shouldn't be doing.... I would definitely go back.... where are you from?

I don't want to be waiting for up to 6 weeks so i'll have no choice if it continues, i haven't slept in over a day because sleeping is too painful and i worry i'll hit my knee in my sleep and wake up having done more damage, i'm in Wiltshire, South West England

Try using ice packs. 20 minutes on, 20/minutes off. Try to relax and take se deep breaths. Hopefully they gave you some pain meds, if not call them and see if they will do so. Don't use heat as that will only add to the swelling at this point. Temember , elevate the leg and ice. Gonna be though but you'll handle it. Anxiety on causes the blood to flow faster and that will cause swelling

I also had a motorbike accident in January. A car hit me head on. I was in hospital for 6 weeks. Amongst my injuries I have 2 torn ligaments in my left knee. I had to have x rays and MRI scans also a bendable brace for many months. I'm due to have my right knee replaced, so when that knees healed I will have my left knee ligaments repaired.

Try not to worry Mirren go to the hospital get the revelation tests done. It may take a long time before an operation is needed, if at all, because they don't like operating unless it's urgent or you're a athlete. Hope this helps

Jesus i'm so sorry tohear about that, something i'm worried about is i may be to scared to get back on my bike, i've only had it for three months, i had to ride it home after the accident but having come off it before i wasn't as nervous getting back on, i lost my 22 year old brother in a motorcycle accident last year so being on the bike in itself it difficult for my parents, im worried they won't let me back on it, i hope all goes well with your surgeries, sorry that it happened to you

      Thankyou Mirren.

I'm not getting on a bike ever again. I'm going to save up and have lessons and buy a car, it's safer.

Take it easy and keep in touch.

I'm in next Friday for my TKR

Thank you very much, i couldn't go without my bike, i love it and i love riding, i'm just scared of what could happen, i know it's more dangerous on a bike than in a car but it's also dangerous in a car and being on the roads at all really, i'll be getting my drivers license soon, it was agreed if i got a bike i had to be driving before i was 20, good luck with everything, i hope you get back on your feet soon
