Crutches

I am fed up of crutches. They dig into my hands causing a bright red shiny strip. I can’t walk more than 20 minutes because of this . Takes almost an hour for my hand to recover. I have tried gloves . Any suggestions or I am never going to get far? I think the handles are too big for my little hands!

I bought a couple of covers that wrap round the hand hold. Mine are brightly striped so look good too.

Is this after THR? I never used crutches. Only walker then cane. I'm in US.

They give us frame then crutches here- then nothing- in the UK

That's not true they give you walking stick, I had complications and ended up with 3 times operated through same wound and they get you walking with a stick as soon as you feel comfortable , I went private because I was lucky enough to be covered in insurance but the health system in the uk is very good

I never got a walking stick, I had to buy mine from Amazon. I never got a walker either. The only things I was given were crutches and a bit of material to help me lift my foot into bed. They did offer several other things but I would have had to pay for them. They were pretty expensive too I thought.

I'm in the US, too. I asked the PT why crutches are not used in the US and she said that they do cause people to have sore underarms and hands. I used a walker for a week or so, then a cane. As long as the cane is held in the hand opposite the side of the hip replacement, walking with a cane does help the patient to walk correctly.

I agree they equip us poorly and the follow up is useless. I rang for advice from a dedicated team supporting us who just said wait to see the specialist by which time my back was so bad and progress held back 5/6 weeks !

I’m in the UK and I had a walker for just the day of the op and then crutches. I used 1 inside and 2 outside until I had my only physio appointment at 6 weeks. Then I was sent home without the crutches or a stick, which felt very weird.

I shouldn’t be joining in this discussion though, because I loved my crutches, went all over the place with them! (Including on the beach....)

Shame the provision of equipment and back up from the hospital is so variable ! There should be a standard not area dependent !

It certainly felt a bit wobbly and strange at first...

I have been on them about 18 months and you must really moisturise your hands constantly, mine used to bleed below the thumb but ok now, I still can't get far because of RA but better than my wheelchair, how much longer have you got

I moisturise constantly but running the risk of blisters or walking less!

I've been on mine for 14 months because of a groin injury and cerebral palsy symptoms getting worse. Please can I ask if you work and if so how do you cope at work? I work in a high school and feel so fed up not be g able to walk properly like others. I get embarrassed by them. The kids are great though and make sure I take them everywhere lol !

Thankfully Angela I am self employed though it means I haven’t earned any money for three months .

I wouldn’t be agile enough at the moment to contemplate working in a school. They are busy places . Hope you get more mobile soon xx

sorry youve had problems, but id just like to say im glad its not just me embarrassed by crutches-although at least when travelling by bus im now entitled to use the front seat without someone asking me to move!xx

Hi Angela I retired about 1 month before but I couldn't manage being on them all day, I try to walk hahaha as much as possible on them but I agree it's really debilitating, their hard work, jazz them up with brightly coloured tape, doesn't make it any easier but they look better, I have to laugh though as went Restaurant the other day and put them behind me, a lady moved them over to the coat rack and I didn't see her, when I missed them and asked her table she said airily, their over there, Erm think she was ambarrased when my friend got quite testy saying I can't walk without them, people don't think

You take care and look at Flexi feet, amazing I couldn't manage without them

People take their legs for granted Alexandria and haven't a clue what some of us have to do just to get up in the morning. I am lucky at work I am an intervention teaching assistant and recently got my own classroom so I can rest frequently. I am being fitted for special shoes from the nhs with an extra 2 inches in the right side, so I think it'll be them that needs jazzing up, lots of bling and sparkles I think lol !!!!!!🤣🤣🤣

I totally agree, it's not that I'm wingging but it can be hard, I have put forward a design that makes both shoes look the same, I used to be in the shoe trade years ago and it would be easy to do, I have a discrepancy as well, that makes it harder as well, mines only about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch though

Oh good luck with that,i bet you were popular with your friend's,you'd have been my BEST friend lol-i did love shoes and still do but I just can't anymore,if I could go barefoot all day i would like Zola bud! i try not to winge but luckily on here we can winge as much as we like as we all have stuff to get of our chests. When I think about the heels and sandals I used to wear and now I'm wearing black unattractive boring clodhoppers it's like going from Jimmy choos(not that i ever did )!!!to Primark haha
