Good morning, I have a question and hope someone can answer it for me....My creatine levels have been high and egfr have been running 54 to 56 for the past 5 years....Lately I have been feeling nauseous and losing some weight...The doctor finally decided to do a CT scan...just got the call & she said everything looks ok.....I'm 64..female..not over weight but have had high blood pressure for over 10 years....My question is can I have low kidney function without something showing on the CT scan?.....I'm confused.....Any help will be greatly appreciated. .Thank you...

My egfr of 44 has been diagnosed with blood tests, not scans. I'm not feeling nauseous or losing weight. Maybe your weight loss and nausea are due to some other condition?

A CT scan would not show poor kidney function to my knowledge. It would show if there growths on the kidney or elsewhere, or something unusual. Your numbers are steady you say. For five years. And that is not in the "normal" range for eGFR it is not terrible. I am in the 35 to 40 range. You certainly can have low kidney function without something showing on the CT scan. You say you are 64. I am 68. As we age our gfr will decline each year. It is nature. You should be happy the CT showed no evidence of cancer or any tumors. That is good news. High blood pressure will slowy damage your kidneys. Does your doctor have your pressure under control? To feel nauseous and lose weight could be due to many things, not just your kidneys. I'm sure you doctor has done some blood work? Does that show anything abnormal? What does she plan to do next?

Thank you for the reply.........oh I am counting my blessing with the good report.....I've been on blood pressure meds for the past 10 years......I guess my kidneys & I are just aging lol........My doctor says if I want a scope done for my stomach she would order one......no thank you, I'll take my good fortune and run like a thieve.....I guess I was under the assumption that a low gfr was caused by damage to the kidneys.....Thank you again for your reply.....I will just accept i am aging and so are my body part........at least they are aging healthy. ...another plus.....time to plan a cruise......

I agree with Rick, but he is not saying your nausea is normal. Or that loosing weight for no reason is normal. There must be a reason for it. You may be loosing weight because you feel nauseated.

Virginia,
The scan will show the outer formation of your kidneys and other areas around them. In addition to doing a scan of my kidneys, bladder, and so forth, my nephrologist did a biopsy. The biopsy identified a small amount of tubular damage and an extensive amount of nonpermanent tubular damage that he said would heal with time and an appropriate treatment plan.
So the biopsy checked for internal damage within my kidneys. My scan looked fine but the biopsy showed some problems, I.r., the tubular damage.
I would definitely encourage you to reconsider the additional testing your doctor has recommended. I always think it's best to check everything out thoroughly when possible. If it were me I'd get that test done and then go on the cruise🐶
Best wishes and let us know how everything is going!

Thank you for the information about the biopsy. ...I guess I was under the assumption that the ct scan would show everything within the kidney.....even tubular damage.....My bp has gotten out of control, at times, even with taking my medications.....I guess my next step is a scope.....but I'll give myself sometime to see if the nausea lets up some.......My doctor doesn't seem to worry about my kidneys.....said gfr 54 is not something to worry about....Thank you everyone for your replies...I really, really appreciate the advise and concern.......Have a great weekend everyone. ..

i'm no doctor. And now that you and doctor agree the kidneys do not seem to be the cause for nausea, I would certainly pursue what is. I know it sounds scary for them to have them put a tube down your throat into your stomach, but do not give it a second thought. I had it done a couple of years ago when I had a similar problem to yours. You are given a medication so that you do not remember the procedure at all. You feel nothing, have no memory of it. It takes very little time. You are no hospitalized. They found nothing. So they simply prescribed Omeprozole (I think that spelling is close), 20 mg every morning, for about 3 months. It worked and I no longer take it. They said the nausea was caused by some kind of swelling in the esophagus which went away naturally. You doctor recommends having a look, so why not do it.
