Culture came back neg for bacteria, but pos for yeast

Have had what I thought was a UTI, Dr didn't send sample though. I did a round of abx with little to no improvement.  Had a culture and urinalyisis  done right after I finished abx and it was neg for everything except ketones (not sure why, not on a special diet).  Still being bothered, so I had another one done yesterday (have now been suffering for 12 days), dip came back pos for blood, leukocyte, nitrite, and protein.  Just got the culture results back and not bacteria, but pos for yeast??  Meanwhile I am still having symptoms and have a low grade fever. Any experience?

Interesting as positive for leukes and nitrites generally indicates bacterial activity. I just searched for yeast and dipstick tests and one reply suggests that a yeast infection will NOT show up on a test strip, while another one said that it will!  Ketones is interesting too as you say you're not on a special diet.

Have you been checked for diabetes recently?  As you already know, ketones show when your body is converting stored fat to glucose instead of using available glucose from carbohydrate in the diet. This is a sign of diabetes and your situation reminded me that my mum had what she though was a uti and it turned out to be a yeast infection caused by high sugar in her urine  - which is how she learnt she was diabetic!  (Don't panic - she controlled the diabetes with diet alone for 50 years and lived to be 94!).

What ABx did you take?  Some of them mess your gut so much that strange things (like ketones) may happen. Did you take probiotics whilst on the Abx?  You may well simply have a yeast infection as the aftermath of the AB.

I can't see from your post how far apart the two cultures were.  Or are you saying you had ONE culture and 2 urinalyses?  One culture actually makes more sense as it would take a week for things to grow.

I suggest, if you still show ketones, you get this checked out.  If you still have symptoms and  fever get this checked out too. You may have had the wrong AB for whatever it was as you took it before the culture.  Or maybe you shouldn't have taken an AB at all as the culture came back negative!  Your doctor should know the importance of not prescribing ABx unless there is something positive to treat!

Sorry this reply is a bit confused!  I am actually a bit confused as to your order of events and the curious results.  Hope you get on ok!

Thank you.  I took Macrobid, and yes I took probiotics while one it.  It was 2 cultures and 2 dips.  One that was on the last day of my abx, showed no bacteria, and just ketones.  The second was 4 days later, the dip light up, and the culture came back pos for yeast. Its yeast in the urine. The culture showed yeast, not the dip.

The Dr that prescribed the abx was just a clinic dr, not my regular GP.

    Hi Victoria!

Sorry about your troubles. I have learned recently that vaginal & UTI infections can present with similar symptoms.

Sounds like you may have BOTH infections. What did doctor recommend for treatment?

Thanks!  I just got results last night, so waiting to hear back from Dr.  It was yeast in the urine though, not a vaginal infection.

If the colony of bacteria is small but causing problems for a patient it may well be undetectable....  All humans have different types of reaction to what is affecting them.....  It is always best to write to your doctors on any subject that affects you and in particular an infection that they are not resolving......  Are they missing something? You may well know your body better than anyone else on the planet and you more than likely care about that body more than anyone also.   Keep at them if you feel something is not right.
