Cured my eustachian tube dysfunction

I've had this problem off and on for years.  I have allergies, so always assumed it was related to that.  Nope.  This past year, I discovered I also have a thyroid issue, and ETD can be related to hypothyroidism.  Well, even on thyroid hormone I still had the ETD.

So I've been researching the web constantly, because my ETD is so annoying.  I have to yawn or swallow constantly or else my ears feel clogged and when I speak, it sounds very muffled.  Sometimes even clearing my ears doesn't help.   At it's worst, I couldn't clear my ears at all.

I've gotten relief for a lot of my other thyroid symptoms with vitamins and minerals.  The research shows that a low thyroid can cause you to be deficient in a lot of different nutrients do to malabsorption and inability to metabolize and convert vitamins into their active forms.   Specifically, you do not convert beta-carotene into the active version of vitamin A that your body uses.

I started hunting around for research related to eustachian tube and vitamins, and found nothing about humans, but eventually I found some for animals.  And it was all about vitamin A deficiency.

In the ear, air is constantly being lost from the ear cavity through the soft tissues of the ear, by a process of difussion which isn't well understood.  If the soft tissue lining the ear cavity is too thin or too porous, you will lose the air a lot faster than normal.  I think this is what is happening for many of us with ETD.  Also, the eustachian tube itself may be sticky, due to the lining of the soft tissues being compromised.  Vitamin A is needed to properly make the epithelial lining of your soft tissues in your eustachian tubes, your ears, your nose and throat and your eyes (and probably everywhere in your body).  If you don't have enough, your soft tissues get scaly and dry, inflexible.  In your ears, that means your eustachian tubes get stuck closed (or maybe stuck open too!) and also the air is lost faster from your ear cavity, causing pressure changes faster than normal.

I found a retinal acetate 5,000 IU vitamin supplement, and started taking that every day and it worked immediately the first day, and has kept my ears clear the past three days!  I know that isn't very long, and maybe I'm celebrating too early, but after dealing with this for so long, three days of not having this problem is too wonderful, I had to share my discovery.

Hope this helps some of you!

P.S.  I also take a low dose zinc and copper supplement.  Zinc helps you move vitamin A around the body.  Without sufficient zinc, you will not benefit form taking vitamin A.   And copper is important to take with zinc, and is also important for the building blocks of soft tissue.

that's similar to what i have had for over a year. it's gotten better with allergy shots. i have a slight fullness in my ears and they click n pop if i open my mouth wide or yawn.

have you always sufferd from allergies? ive never had trouble with my ears but i all started after i had tonsillitus

i have, and i never knew how bad it really was until i saw an allergist when all of this started happening. i actually had 2 tests done at different offices; they came up with the same results. i used to get between 4-8 sinus infections per year, it was awful. since i have been on the shots (2018, June) I haven't had one since. The popping in my ears has gone down a bit, along with the fullness. i dont know if this will ever go away, but its manageable now.

did you have to request for them to be done at the doctors? is it in both your ears or just one did you still get slight pain x

I just made an appointment with an allergist, and took the findings to the ENT to see. Some ENT's will do allergy tests as well, so that's where i get my shots from. I have a bad deviated septum, espeically on the left side, so that's the side that cracks/pops the most. As of now the right side only does it a tiny bit, but it used to be worse. It doesn't hurt to get an allergy shot, but like i said, the ETD affects everyone differently. If the ENT says your eustachian tubes are fine, then it's possible it's allergy related, but don't take my word because i'm not a doctor lol.

I too believe my ETD is caused by allergies. I take a daily Cetrizine antihistamine tablet, which I finds does help. To have a course of injections to desensitise will probably help too.

it probably isn't fluid, i know the feeling you are talking about. go see an allergist. i wouldn't do a grommet.

      Hello again Jessica,

It probably is fluid as what else would stick the tubes together?

I've had several perforations in my left eardrum and a ton of muck was suctioned out. Feels wonderful once it's been cleared,

however, suffering with allergies I only get a few weeks, possibly a few months when they fill back up again. I think I cause the perforations as I squeeze nostils together and blow, I then feel the eustachian tube open. If you don't already try a daily antihistamine, try them. I also use a steriod nasal spray called Budesonide. You have to use it for a few weeks before you feel any real benefit.

It is still there but it’s reduced dramatically. I used to get vertigo feeling occasionally, especially a rush of pain to my head if I stood up really fast or turned my head. It all depends on elevation level too. If I’m at a higher altitude (at the top floor of building) it will bother me more. It’s to the point now where I don’t even notice it. I’m not sure if it will ever go away. I think sadly once you have this , you got it. But there are ways to treat it to suppress the fullness and cracking down.

thankyou anne i have just looked online i cant seem to find anywhere that sells it in england. you must be in so much pain why have they never given you a grommet or the balloon dilation? xx

our symptoms are so similar i find if i get up to fast or turn my head i hear a really loud buzzing noise and one ear goes very def. im phoning my doctors today to see about this test its controlling my life so much do you find swimming makes it worse?

Morning Jessica, I live in England too. You can't buy the Budesonide, it's prescription only. However, since you live in England ask your GP if he/she will prescribe a Nasal DROPS called:

Flixonase they're in a green box. Follow instructions and use for 6 weeks morning and night as I have done in the past and they work. My smell and taste even returned after use. After coming of these request the Flixonase Nasal spray and continue to use that every day.

I'm not in pain at all from Eustachian Tube Dysfunction, it's just a miserable thing to suffer from. My ENT consultant wouldn't give me grommets, evidently, they can set up ear infections and I've had enough of those over the years. Not sure if you've read any of my older post, but I suffered Bacterial Meningitis many years ago through the eustachian tube being so blocked for so long a bacterial infection ensued that went to my brain. I lost the sight in my left eye and hearing in my right ear. Thank Good I lived to tell the tell. If anyone gets an earache who suffer ETD they should immediately request antibiotics (broad spectrum) to protest themselves.

i did get a balloon dilation. it really helped with the INTENSE PRESSURE i felt in my head, the temples of my head, and ears. i had that done last april, and then started shots in june '18. so that procedure does help.

Funny you put cotton wool in your ears, as I do too at times, it does seem to help with the blocked feeling. I flew this year the

first time in 6 years. Ears weren't blocked before boarding but

were very blocked on landing. I did manage to pop the tubes back open again though, so thankful for that. Buy from Boots

some EarPlanes, £9.99. Put them in as soon as you get in the cabin

and before take off. I sometimes don't take mine out until

the plane has landed and the door is opened. If you do remove them once the plane has reached it's height, not forget to reinsert once the plane starts to descend. If your doctor prescribes the spray or preferably the drops you should be fine for flying. Good luck and have a nice time. I understand how awful you feel and feel so luck I've had a good 3 months respite from it....not sure how but not complaining. September when the mould comes on the trees that's usually a bad month for my ETD.

thankyou i have got myself some ear planes i hope they help. i spoken to my doctor today she would not refer me to have an allergie test she said i should stop reading things on the internet they are just so unhelpfull xx

    • Posted

Morning, I'm not surprised one bit she won't refer you for allergy testing....costs too much and with the NHS being in the state it's in, it's all about saving money. The sort of test you would need would have to be a blood test. You probably know yourself what affects you, so take a daily Cetrizine like I do.

Did you ask for the nasal drops? The EarPlanes will definitely help if used properly. Silly of her saying don't use the internet as people on here all help each other with what has helped them. Plus this is a Patient website. When I told my ENT consultant he thought it is a good idea to speak with people who suffer the same. When are you going on holiday?
