Curved toes

Hi, for as long as I can remember I have had these two curved toes. It's the toe beside the big one and it's the same on both feet. I have been quite self conscious about them and I never go out bare foot, even on holiday.

Could anybody inform me why they are like this and any remedys?

I have attached a picture for reference.

Thanks

Probably just hereditary and truthfully, i think they look just fine!! There is a surgery where the toe is broken then straightened with pins but I would not touch thise toes unless you are in pain. How old are you?

Thanks for the reply. I'm 26. I don't fancy having surgery. Do you think toe straightners would work?

I have the same problem, only mine brought on by surgery. Worse than that, my second toe on left foot sticks up to almost look like the one finger salute. Try this.  Take a piece of paper tape or flesh colored about 6-8 inches long; wrap it around the curved toe and secure one side in the opposite direction of the curve until you see a distinct straightness.  Then tape it to the ball of your foot.  Take the other piece and tape it in the opposite direction.  It will resemble the icon of the "race for the cure" or "wounded warrior" as it criss crosses.  I've been doing that for years to tame my unruly toes.  When I could wear sandals the flesh colored tape could be hardly seen. Good Luck

    Hi

I have exactly the same problem and have spent many, many hours trying to work out what the problem was even called and i still do not know. Like you it affects both second toes and like you it has always had a massive effect on my confidence. I have never worn open toe shoes or flip flops.

Let me tell you now, i am 35 and have tried everything over the last 15 years barring surgery. Nothing has worked so please before you spend a small fortune like me on every kind of sttaightener/splint/tape/toe stretcher etc on the net please dont. Surgery is the only way to sort the problem. I am currently looking into the surgical side of things now after finally accepting this cant be sorted at home.

No disrespect intended to the other replies BUT it is so easy for others to say leave it alone. It can really knock your confidence and although you know people are not staring as much as you think they are you cant help but feel weird when you have to be barefoot around others. I would say definately consider surgery if you can afford it but do the research first to make sure you know the pros and cons. That is what i am doing now.

Yes I said to leave it but you put another prospective on the problem! I totally understand. I am a 67 year old woman who has had a few cosmetic surgeries so get it. smile Now because of metatarsal fracture just want to walk!!!hood luck to everyone

I respect your opinion, but you cannot change genetics.  I'm 70 and have tried everything known to podiarty  to correct my foot problems. My taping problem doesn't solve the problem, it just allows you to make your toes  look nornal. What you are proposing , surgery, is a metal pin that may or may not work and will result in the inability to never bend the toe.  As I've said in other posts, I used to be able to pick up things with my toes.  Not now!  You say you've tried everthing?  try not ever being able to bend your toe again!  That's what surgery will do.  How do you think they get that toe to straighten out?  With a metal pin! I would post photos, but you probably wouldn't believe them. Anything would be better than having a toe completely straight with no feeling because all the nerves have been severed!

      Have you had this surgery?

If you have, then you must know you won't have to worry about wearing flip-flops.  If you have the surgery, the pins to staighten your toes out will not allow you to wear them.  Believe it or not, you have to dig into a flip-flop with your toes to be able to keep it from being about two feet behind you when walking.

      Hi Linda.

I hope you do not think i was negatively addressing your tape solution. I was not. However I can assure you that taping is definately not a solution for myself. The toes are bent at such extreme angles that taping them in any way results in extreme discomfort and other foot problems. Trust me I have used so many kinds of taped and taped on every way imaginable. Simply put my toes cannot be taped straight. Each persons issue is obviously unique as you say it works for you but my experience with taping is to only cause other foot problems.

Surgery was and always has been my last resort. I am fully aware of the complications, process and side effects associated with surgery. The research i have done on the subject over the years should give me a degree! So please do not assume i am uneducated on the pitfalls of surgery. That is why I told the op to consider surgery but do the research first. Plenty of people have had surgery and are happy with the results. Plenty of folk wish they had not had surgery You only ever hear the negative stories but you have to balance the facts and information correctly. Then make an informed decision. It is however frustrating to have something that affects you hugely to be told to "just forget it" though. Its rather unhelpful.

      Regards

I didn't take it personal. I just know after having two hammer toes straightened, I have neve been able to bend my toes and one toe was left at an angle that it has to be taped down.
