Cushion for pre op hip pain?

Posted , 6 users are following.

Hi lovely people,

can I ask if anyone has purchased a memory foam cushion to sit on and did it help?

i am 51 and have severe OA in Left hip, the right hip is rapidly catching up!  Not to be left out!  I have seen the Consultant and will be having a LTHR in about 6 weeks.

Once I get going I can walk reasonably well, 2-4 miles with the dog. Standing is fine, BUT sitting is a complete pain in the you know what!  Both hips hurt when sitting but obviously I can't stand or walk ALL the time.

I work as an Ocuupational Therapist. In fact my first ever job was Orthopaedics and teaching hip precautions! I work in the Community and have to drive fairly long distances. Yes my colleagues are taking the Micky and there are a lot of jokes about raised toilet seats!  I do have to spend a large amount of time in the office and have to stand and pace about regularly.

Back to the cushion, any advice would be truly welcomed.

X

Hi , im a nurse and used to manage our orthopaedic dept so am right there with you - ive had resurfacing , LTHR, and 7 weeks ago RTHR ( conversion from failed resurfacing) over the last 8 years the memory fosm cushion i bought from Amazon has come out both pre and post op each time , its been to the local pub and restaurants and in the car , on holiday LOL. Its a wonderful thing and cost about £25 from amazon , with a removable / washable cover - cant recommend it enough ! Good luck with your op and recovery ( and yes I,ve suffered the same jokes re the toilet seats! ) I work in a nursing home now and borrowed an armchair from our activities lounge for the first 6 weeks as our furniture was too low - have given it back now but it was a godsend , with my trusty MF cushion on the seat xx

      Thank you Bini,

looking at Amazon right now. I am OK at home but some places only have hard/uncomfortable chairs and. My sitting tolerance is low. I attended a training course yesterday morning only. I ended up standing at the back feeling a right wally!  If only I had brought a cushion with me!

      Thanks again. X

    Hi Kriss,

It may work, I bought a cushion to make my seat higher after the op, but it's not memory foam. Before the op I found our settee was to low and caused me pain when sitting, so bought a higher one and it was much better. So possible if your sitting a bit higher up it may take some of the pain away, no harm in trying.

I bought 2 of the Hermell Hip cushions 16 x 18 x 4" on Amazon they cost about 37.00...It has a carry handle and I'm still using it a year later and take it with me, because I can not sit on soft furniture.

I have a cushion for the car - post operatively the scar rubs on the seat, and the cushion raises my backside out of the seat so the lovely supportive sides do not rub any more.
