cutting psoriatic nails

Posted , 4 users are following.

Hi - I was diagnosed some months ago now, although I have been in pain for about 2 yrs. So far I have been able to control my pain with diclofenac and occasional paracetamol or co codamol. I am lucky that the psoriasis is in an area where I can hide it, but my nails and toenails also affected.

Do any of you visit anyone specifically to do your toenails ? I am finding that the shape of them makes it very difficult to cut them. They have plaques under the nail so the nails are growing all curved. I am wondering if this is available on NHL or do you have to pay for this ?

Any advice is welcome smile

    Hi, I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis earlier this year. My nails have been ridged and "funny-shaped" for years before this diagnosis. Last year I lost a toenail for no apparent reason, now understand why. My Chiropodist (not available on the NHS unless you are diabetic or over 65) has suggested I use Muji nail clippers; these are very effective and make a nice clean cut to avoid the splitting typical of psoriatic nails.

    Try to cut nails straight across, not point or filed down too much towards the nail beds;

    just take the corners off with the smoother side of an emery board.

      Thanks Stephanie.  I use this type of nail clipper and they are fine on my finger nails of which 3 are away from the nail bed. These are wavy and odd shaped but I file them and polish them most of the time to help them cosmetically.  I am just going to need to persevere with my toenail or treat myself to a visit to a chiropractor every now and again.

      Thanks again for sharing x

    I called my derm and he recommended a great spa to keep my toes in shape.

    If not then call around to various spas explain the issue there should be no problem.

    Also I have a nail tool like a elec rotor file with different nail tool attachments which makes it easy in between spa visits. Ck online.

    Good Luck
