Cyst on fatty liver

I complained about my right side hurting me (under ribcage). My bloodwork all came back fine, switched doctors at Kaiser, had more blood work done, came back fine. Finally after many complaints I had ultrasound done & was diagnosed with fatty liver & cyst on liver. I've Googled quite a bit & now Im a bit overwhelmed. Seing doctor again soon . I want to ask all the right questions. I am eating better, cutting out most carbs & alcohol. Can this diagnosis be reversed & should cyst be removed?

Sherry, I am going thru a bit of the same thing. 6 years ago a few cysts were found on my liver (which was also enlarged). At the time they said I was very likely born with the cysts and the liver enlargement as well. The Gastroenterologist said there was nothing to be done at that time. I too have been experiencing discomfort under my right rib, and this past weekend went to the ER for an unrelated issue. A CT scan showed the cysts and that my already enlarged liver had increased a bit in size.  My liver function tests done in the ER came back normal. I suspect I will be undergoing more of a workup.  Its very anxiety producing, so I totally understand how you are feeling.  As far as the cysts go, the Gastro back then told me they sometimes do rupture and that it would be incredibly painful, like no other pain I have had.  Doubt this helps, but you are not alone. Please keep me posted.

Hi Sherry, & the difference between fatty liver and fatty liver disease is determined through the labs.  With normal labs, your fatty liver hasn't reached a state of disease, so this is optimistic news.  Reducing alcohol and carbs, particularly simple sugars like high fructose corn syrup (in sodas) should resolve your problem.

Liver cysts are quite common and usually quite benign.  They should be watched with follow-up ultrasounds every 6-12 months or so to be sure it is not growing in size.  If your cyst is not changing over time, it's best to let sleeping dogs lie.  The risks of surgery to drain a benign cyst is usually not worth the benefit.

I'm betting you're going to see improvement in your symptoms soon if you can stay on a fatty liver diet.  Have another look at that cyst in 6-12 months or so to make sure it's behaving and all should be good.
