Cystitis isnt going

I am 21 years old and for the last 2-4 years I get cystitis 2-3 times a year, last Sunday 24.11.13 I woke up and knew straight away I had cystitis I went to the walk in doctors and was prescribed trimethoprim, normally after the first day I feel much better, this time it wasn't the case, I went back to the doctors and was prescribed macrodantin, I have finished my 7 day course today and my cystitis still hasn't gone! Last week it was unbearable, its not as bad as then but it is still very uncomfortable, I feel if I was to have one glass or orange or coffee or go gym it would come straight back, I am suffering with bad back and belly pain and also every morning when I go a wee it stings, throughout the day I drink lots of water and it no longer burns but the next morning the burning just comes back, also even when I do not wee downstairs still burns, im just really confused, are the tablets working or do I need new tablets, I forgot to add my doctors sent of a urine sample to the lab and the results suggested macrodantin to be the best tablet for the bacteria I have, what is going on, I am becoming very distressed as its just not budging!!help sad

Have you tried Gepan install. I believe you can now buy it on line from HG Medicines. I found it when looking

for alternatives on the COB foundation web site.

Hi there, I am also 21 and have been getting re-occurring UTI's . I have had these for about 3-4 years now..

I have at least 3 a year but in the past month I have had about 4! Which is the shortest period of time they have came back in! I was prescribed Trimethoprim once again but this time it did not have an effect.. probably because my body is so immune to it now after 3 years of taking it! I then went back and was prescribed macrodantin, which did not seem to help either. I went back again 2 weeks ago and was prescribed another anti biotic cefalexin or something and it hasnt budged once more! I am getting very worried about it as I am constantly getting these infections and I am not sure what is triggering them off! I am not in any pain with them but i feel the urge to go to the toilet more often and hardly anything comes out. Then after peeing I feel very uncomfortable inside. I always seem to know i have one because my urine produces this foul smell which has been the same symptom every time i have had one. I have done everything the doctors have told me to including wiping from front to back, drinking water, have tried cranberry with no results and I have even invested in a herbal remedy called D Mannose which hasnt seemed to help either. I am going again today to the doctors but I am quite worried as to what will happen next as I certainly do not want any more antibiotics as thats 3 different ones in the past 6 weeks I have been on. Any advice would be great! Thanks

Hi Catherine, I realise this is a very old thread but thought I'd reply anyway on the off-chance you were still having this problem. I am in very much the same situation, early twenties and I get cystitis about 5 or 6 times a year. When I do get it I get it very very badly, it's lasted up to 10 days before. Rather than stinging or burning constantly I have exactly the same symptoms as you do, the needing to wee and then no wee and then being desparately uncomfortable afterwards. I was put on ciprofloxacin to help, it didn't get rid of mine til I'd completed the full 7 day course but it did eventually get rid of it. D Mannoose is complete bull, I've been sold that before and it did sweet nothing.

I'm sure you probably do this already but sometimes I find if I hit it really hard, straight away with cystopurin, (as in, I feel that suspicious wee feeling and literally gulp a glass of cystopurin on the spot! and then continue the rest of the 48 hour course) I can fend it off, or at least reduce the discomfort so I can do things like go to work. One thing that sets mine off is having sex with my boyfriend from behind, (especially if it's the first time after we've had some time apart) and, oddly, also when we have sex and he bumps me at "the top" repeatedly. It hurts a bit but usually it's quite intense and I'm all like "Yeah this is great I don't care!" in the moment, but then I almost always find out afterwards I have cystitis. Stoopid me. Don't know why this is as I think he's bumping my cervix rather than anything else but it definitely happens after that. Maybe try the ciprofloxacin, and try rearranging stuff for sex for a little while if you're having it regularly. I really sympathise, cystitis is so irritating.

Hi Ellie, if you're still suffering from recurrent cystitis you might want to try taking a big dose of Fluconazole (the oral treatment for thrush taken as a single sky blue capsule usually) after your antibiotics. Last time I had cystitis and took loads of antibiotics it gave my thrush (as antibiotics are known to do in women) and I had to take two fuconazole tablets (on the recommenation of my gynaecologist) in order to clear it. This might have been why you were burning all the time rather than just around the time you needed to wee. Strangely lower body physiotherapy and massage can also sometimes help recurrent vaginal pain and recurrent cystitis. Good luck, cystitis blows, I sympathise!
