Cystoscopy and Dilation 7 days ago and still feeling symptoms!

I'm a 21 year old female. Since I was 16, I got UTI symptoms every month, but the tests would come back negative. On Monday, February 3rd I had a cystoscopy under GA and was also dilated. My urologist told me my urethra was so narrow and that's why I was experiencing those symptoms. He said the symptoms from the surgery should subside after a couple days. It's 7 days after and it still stings when I pee and I'm still having cramps. When I asked my doctor he couldn't answer as to why it was still hurting or how long it was going to continue to hurt. He just kept saying "it will get better". At this point I'm very frustrated and confused. I'm too scared to have sex or even drink anything other than water. Also, the symptoms come and go. 24 hours ago I felt almost no pain and was so relieved, but waking up today it stung again and the cramps returned. My urologist couldn't answer that either. He literally kept saying "it'll get better". I just need to know when this stinging and urge to pee and cramps will stop. I'm desperate and angry and left with more questions than answers. Anyone else experience this? How long until you fully recovered?? HELP!!!

I got tested for any infections and all came back negative . All i keep hearing from my doctor is "it'll get better don't worry." No time frame, no nothing. I call him almost everyday complaining. I'm on the verge if tears.

Is your Consultant a Urologist? If so, how about asking to see a gynaecologist/obstetrician? I think it's unacceptable to be left in pain, so keep pestering! Good luck.

Hi Emily,
I have had 2 cystocopies and I know how painful the post-procedure urination can be. The urologist should have given you either pyridium (generic and cheaper cost) or Uribel (brand name medication and more expensive, but works better in my opinion), which are both prescription medications to help reduce the pain when urinating after cystoscopy. Hopefully, they also gave you an antibiotic (typically Ciprofloxacin) before and after the procedure to prevent any infection. With either pyridium or Uribel, I only experienced 1-2 days of painful urination after cystoscopy. As for the urine culture tests coming back negative, you may want to ask the urologist to test you for atypical organisms that can cause UTI, which are not part of the routine and standard panel for urine culture. It is a specific test and requires special handling by the lab (i.e., once you give them a clean catch urine sample at the lab, the lab technician must immediately transfer your urine into a special specimen cup for this test). Please consider asking the urologist to test you for presence of Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma in your urine, and make sure you go to the lab that is equipped to perform these tests. Hope you find some answers for the chronic UTI and get the right treatment. If it is truly chronic UTI, a urologist can also prescribe a preventive antibiotic medication, if clinically warranted. Take care, Emily.

Hi Mona! Thanks so much for your response. I actually had that test before, my urologist explained it all to me & that we might be billed like $250 if incase my insurance didn't cover it because it is a specific test. I did that and it also came back negative. The cystoscopy and dilation was the last resort. I was on pyridium until i finished the bottle, then he prescribed me these blue pills, said it was the same as pyridium but I couldn't hold it down, I was vomiting all day. After that he had no answers for me. Just kept saying "it'll get better don't worry". The stinging stopped about a few days ago, now I just have this tight cramp in my bladder just as I'm finishing peeing and the pain of the cramp shoots from my bladder to my urethra for a few seconds then it goes away.

Dear Emily,
I am so sorry to hear that you are continuing to have the post-procedural cramping and pain. I hope you are able to find another more empathetic urologist, who can help you better. When I was looking for another urologist for myself for a second opinion for my unexplained "hematuria", I actually sought out someone in an academic setting (i.e., physicians who work for major university medical centers). In my experience, they are definitely more compassionate and are willing to spend more time with you. I believe majority of these physicians who work at university medical centers are also faculty members, and as such, they are more involved in the latest research and findings and can be more up to date on differential diagnoses and treatment options. If you live close to a university medical center, you may want to consider this as an option. Also, you may want to consider seeing an infectious disease specialist if urologists are not able to help you find the cause of your UTI's unless you have already been tested for parasites and viruses that can cause UTI's. I sincerely hope you can get the problem resolved as quickly as possible.
