Dad's GFR steadily dropping now at 19

Hi

Dad (nearly 89) had renal appointment today and GFR has fallen from 25 in April 2014 to 19 today. He started at GFR 30 in Jan 2013 so rate of decline has speeded up.

At this rate he will be down to 15 in six months time so questions are.

Is the  rate of decline likely accelerate or stay the same or possibly steady off?

At the end stage 5, does GFR drop from 15 to zero before kidneys fail or does GFR 15 mean failure is pretty iminent with conservative management?

The consultant spoke of renal end stage at a GFR of 10 rather than 15 which I keep reading on the internet. Was he just being optimnistic?

Thanks

    Hi,

Your dad is stage 5 now which is end stage, around about now if the patient is fit and well discussions would start regarding transplant, this is not always possible for everyone so dialysis would be the next option.  I was 9% when I started dialysis the rate in which kidney function drops is different for everyone sometimes its slow and sometimes not.  In April 2014 I was told it would be at least 18 months before I would need dialysis but I started in December so the consultants can only give an idea, they would have no way of knowing that exact information.  I would research the different types of dialysis and also ask if this is suitable and what are the options for him.

      Hi Helen

Thanks for reply and glad to hear you have been able to start dialysis. This really isn't an option the consultant has put forward for Dad  and Dad has accepted this, in his own words he realises that his time is up. He has a number of other health issues, major stroke in recent years, heart problems, mobility problems etc.

I am wondereing how long his GFR will take to drop from 19 down to say 9 when you have started dialysis?

    Hi,

Everyone is different it depends on how his blood pressure is controlled, if this is the case he may have quite sometime.  Know one will be able to give you a timescale on this as you saw with me I was told 18 months and it was 7 so its about keeping that bp good as poorly kidneys don't like high BP, I found if I got a cold my kidney function would drop as a result of that so sadly there is not timeline these things happen.  My advice would be to enjoy your time together and make every day count

    xx
