Daily vertigo in perimenopause

Hi ...does anyone have experience of vertigo being possibly linked to perimenopause? I'm 51 and 9 months ago started suffering night time head spins, followed by severe vertigo attacks on a morning. Several trips to ENT later, they said BPPV, but despite Epley treatments, I still have it. It's unbearable, relentless and terrifying. I've been borderline calling for an ambulance a number of times, it's that bad. Some days worse than others but for no apparent reason. Even the slightest head movement can set of a severe spin. ENT say they cant do anything more. I'm now doing vestibular exercises and have tried everything. Reducing caffeine, salt, alcohol, guided meditation, acupuncture, massage, sertraline. Nothing is helping. My last resort is to trial HRT. Has anyone had similar experiences? This is wrecking my life 😥

Hi I know exactly how you feel. I am post menopause and have been suffering with dizziness/vertigo for so long It is one of a long list of symptoms that I have had to deal with and it is the one that disturbs me the most because it is daily. Even though I had an MRI when it first started a few years ago I still can't stop the anxiety it brings. I try not to google as it makes things worse. You should maybe look at pppd sometimes the symptoms are very similar. Our hormones affect every part of our body and unfortunately we just have to accept that this is us at the moment and hope for better days. I hope you feel better soon but you are not alone.

Thankyou for your reply. It's just awful isnt it. My ENT chap also said it could be pppd or vestibular migraine. Can I ask....do you take HRT?

No I don't take HRT I prefer not to go that route, but it might work for you it's very much a personal choice. Do you find you get waves of dizziness even when sitting still almost like going down in an elevator. I find it really stressful and sympathise with you.

Hi, yes I do get that but the worst is the severe spinning that makes me have to hold onto things. I get this mostly on a morning when sitting up in bed or getting out of bed. Its really very severe and however much I try to relax it terrifies me. It's made worse by the very slightest of head movements. Its truly been a horrific 9 months and I feel totally traumatised by the whole thing. I dont want to take HRT either and I dont know if it would help but I'm reaching breaking point in my ability to cope with it. Do you get head spins at night when led down. I can be asleep and get a sudden head spin which actually wakes me up! That's how it all started.....

Hi yes I do get them at night too for no apparent reason. I agree it is all really scary I think our anxiety makes it all worse and I wish I could tell you I have found something that has helped. I try to take one day at a time and stop my mind thinking the worst but it is very hard some days. I hope you have support at home sometimes just talking to someone about how you feel and getting reassurance helps. Feel free to pm me if you need to.

I have had dizziness/vertigo for 5 years now. It's so bad that I have pretty much given up driving unless it is really close to my home. Like all the other terrible symptoms that have ruined my life, I can only hope that things get better with time.

Hi, really sorry to hear of your suffering. May I ask how your dizziness first came about and what it's like now? Did you seek medical help and have any tests or get a diagnosis? Is there a time of day when your vertigo is better or worse?

this is the most scariest symptom for me, i had it more in peri but its back and im 5yrs post menopausal. last week was the worse id had in the morning so i got an appointment with the GP and he thought it sounded like Menieries Disease which when i got home i did some research and its a debilitating disease that can lead to loosing your balance completely and becoming housebound so thats scared me to death but im convinced iv not got that. i have an appointment with ENT at the end of March so hopefully they'll prove iv not got it as reading all the ladies posts gives me hope its just to do with the menopause.
like shan i will only drive locally. its just a dreadful scary feeling as we feel out if control and i dont know about you but it puts me on edge for days.
i hope this particular symptom would just leave us alone and go away.
sending you all a comforting but bit unsteady hug x

hi! you might consider getting your jaw joints checked as well, if you think you might be a grinder or clencher -- temporomandibular joint disorders can affect the ears and cause dizziness too. I wrote a somewhat related post here; perhaps you might find it useful:

hang in there, feel free to message any time 😃

Yes, I have this as well. I was given SERC and told to do those exercises as well. I am on waiting list for ENT I have had MRI (nothing) I am at my wits end as well and will be asking my GP for HRT . Anxiety accompanies the vertigo but now that I realize it is related to menopause I don't have panic attacks as much . So thankful I found this site
