Damaged extensor tendon in thumb?

Posted , 1 user is following.

I have cut the back of my thumb while sharpening a carving knife. The cut is close to the thumb base and quite deep. I cannot fully straighten my thumb, but i can push it straight using my other hand, then it bends when i let go. It is very painful below the cut when i try to raise my thumb as if giving a 'thumbs up' and i cannot raise it fully. Have i damaged the tendon and will it heal on its own?
