Damaged thumb nail

I have crashed my thumb nail in the car door 3 months ago.. Most part of the old nail was damaged and I have removed it. A new nail is growing. My question is, does the small part of nail left on the right hand side of the thumb has to be removed so that the new nail grows in the correct way? Or is the new nail going to push it out? Thank you.

You should leave it alone and let the nail grow as normal. The part that is left should continue to grow. At 3 months you should be seeing some  healthy nail by now.  However if the nail bed has been badly damaged you may have an odd shaped nail with ridges and dents.

Thank you for your reply. The new nail is half out almost but growing below the old one. The old one is very small part. Can I email you a photo?

You can upload a photo on to this site...click on the right hand icon at the top of a new message. If you can remove the old piece of nail without too much pain, then it wont do any harm. Be prepared for bleeding. Wash your hands well before attempting and have a sterile piece of lint to hand just in case you have to cover it .

I don't have the option in phone browser for photo upload. It's painful to pull it. I hope it falls off somehow.
