Dangers Gabapentin! Are Health Care Professional REALLY clueless?

Hi! Yesterday I was released from a one day stay in Hospital. I've been taking gabapentin for 5 years and I'm 54. I have a lot of the side effects which include chronic infections. My Parents and I asked the Hospitalist about Gabapentin. I'm currently trying to taper off. I started out at 3600 mg and currently take 1200 mg. I understand from Primary the lower I go the harder the withdrawal. Great!  It's bad enough!  The same answer I've heard from every Doctor and Specialist was given. It's a safe alternative to opiates and benzos. Great for painmoatly nerve. I actually believe that They don't know what to do or say!  So many people take gabapentin and there is no clear cut withdrawal. Not even close. The opioids epedemic is creating a no pain med environment. Until it's continually discussed by People having severe or even minor problems They won't see the scope. Studies have to be done and the longer I'm on gabapentin the more devasting side effects!  What are thoughts on this subject?  We decided to keep talking to People and letting Them know how it's destroyed My health and others!  The less overall medication Im taking the better I'm feeling too. I went from like 3 meds to 22 while taking gabapentin. Starting to wean off everything possible down to 7. I wonder how many People are in Hospital getting expensive test done, incredible ill and all from side effect of gabapentin. The deaths? I could've easily died and My family would've been clueless as to underlying reason!  Anyone else feel like it's more about what else can We do as Doctors?!  I did tell Hospitalist I would rather withdrawal from opiate or benzo any day over gabapentin. He couldn't believe it!!

II have had a terrible time discontinuing gabapentin after 20 years.  The physicians all claim this is a wonderful medication for nerve pain, but I think it made my pain much worse.

I am so glad I am off this nasty drug.  It took a long time to feel better, but I am glad I listened to myself.  I promise you, I told my physician for the last 16+ months that gabapentin came with too many side effects and was terrible to discontinue, and he still questions why I refuse to take it.  I guess he does not listen to a word I say.

I'm starting to wonder if it shouldn't be told to the Politicians!  it all seems political to Me.

Handing it out like candy in the UK, for everything from anxiety to pain. I took 3000mgs per day for a year, getting off it took over six months. Horrible withdrawal and it never helped my neuro pain anyway. They kept insisting I hadn't reached the optimum dose! I don't know where the medical profession are going with this drug. They act as if it can't do any harm, and is less dangerous than opioids. What rubbish.

Amen!!...i was put on this terrible product for back pain. I was told this was a safe alternative to opioids as I would not need to worry about addiction....are you kidding me 😳

...I've been able to drop from 1800 mg/day to 900. If I go lower the nausea, agitation, anxiety, insomnia, sever hot flashes, fainting....it is criminal and something needs to be done. Be very careful titrating down. I do 100mg/month and that is even hard. I asked my Dr for 100mg caps along with my 300mg caps. Use caution and patience. There is no help for our Dr's to help us because we have yet to develop a safe downward titration protocol to follow for this medication.  I pray every day that I will be restored to my pre-gabapentin self. I feel like a hurricane blew strait through my hypothalamus!

Dr's aren't God's they are just now begining hear from us. It took me 1 week of hell after abruptly stoping when my Rx was completed.....thats how I found this website, I googled "patient reviews of gabapentin"

    A real eye opener.
