Date for Op

I have my pre op on 11th May and just had a letter with a date for op on 22nd May. Tried to get an x Ray or MRI on my back cause mostly pain there. Can anyone reassure me me about back pain being due to hip pain I feel I could delay it if back pain was resolved although still reduced range of movements eg socks& shoes and bending. I think I'm still hoping to avoid it. My back is usually very stiff in the mornings and painful to sit on loo and get up again osteopath said it is more than likely related due to limp and wearing facet joints down. Does anyone have relief from back pain. The orthopods don't want to do tests on my back as they say I'm under hip guys.

My consultant said my back pain is not directly linked to my hip only indirectly by the way I walk and the change in gait.

I had an MRI 5 years ago on my back that showed bulged L5-S1.

Would ask a few more questions

Hello Caroline I had continual lower back pain with stiffness and excruciating sciatic nerve pain. Hip X-ray showed marked detereriotation of right hip but I could not pin point this pain. Hip guy did not want to plunge in and do a THR and then have me still in pain. This is why he wanted it investigated first. THR was done on 19 March. All discomfort now is from post surgery which will clear up in due course. Have my check up at 8 weeks on May 12th. hope my replacement has begun to connect with my osteoporotic bones and I will have all the restrictions lifted. Doing my bit, daily exercises from PT and daily walking. Still using support when outside but no need inside. As you will glean from this I had a very good surgeon whose main objective was to get me pain free. Went NHS after a lot of reasearch into private hospitals in my area. I was lucky to get the surgeon suggested by my GP. My surgeon also works in the private sector but it was the access to PT and occupational therapy that was not available privately

To be honest the hip pain masked my back. Two weeks post op on Monday and apart from op soreness all 👍🏼 here.

Hello Caroline. You have my sympathy. How different things are in different parts of the country. My surgeon wanted my back checked before he did hip and told me to go to GP as red tape did not allow him to refer. GP order a MRI and found due to a collapsed disc my sciatic nerve was trapped and bulging. Was given an epidural injection to shrink it. This relieved a lot of pain. Next visit to hip guy meant he was now happy to go ahead as he could now identify the amount of pain from hip. I will be given further epudurals long as they give me 4 months relief at a time otherwise they would consider surgery. This was November 2014 and sciatic pain gone with an odd flare up since hip op in March 2015

    I would go to GP

    Hope this helps

Hi, leading up to my op I had lower back pain that ached, not severely but annoying and feeling of stiffness. To ease (sadly no cure) I'd stand and arch my back backwards with my ams stretched out, several times each session at various times o the day when felt needed to. Worked for perode of time. Also I used heat pads, hot water bottles and tried to keep th base as wam as possible. That also helped until the op. Now 8 weeks post op.....no back pain and other pains.  I couldn't take too many painkillers but what I tried did help a bit.  Good luck and very best wishes to you.

Oh Kevin I'm so thrilled to read your reply to Caroline as my back pain and relief of it  is exactly as you describe - sometimes the back aches more than the hip! And I have been worrying that it would not be resolved after the thr and I would be no further forward. So thanks, I can stop worrying about it now and find something else to dress about!

    Hi Caroline,

I guess I just want to say, take one problem at a time.  At this point just trust your hip surgeon.  Have the needed THR and let your body settle into that improvement and then see about your back.  Our bodies are so interconnected! One thing wrong can affect other things which in turn affect other things and it goes on and on.  MRI's can be given to people with metal hip joints.  I asked my doctor about that and he said they have a way.  So if that is a concern also, perhaps there will be a solution.

I am not sure how your system works, but if I wanted an MRI of my back before my hip surgery, I would use the reasoning of gathering base line data to compare to after the surgery so we can track improvements.  Here in the States I would get my way, but I do not know about where you live.

Hang in there Caroline.  Now you have things rolling in the right direction and keep in touch so that we can support you along the way.  This surgery might be the best thing that ever happens for you!  Mine have been successful and changed my life for the better.  Now I can sneak up on my children when they are doing something wrong out of my site and think they will get by with it.  Hee Hee!  Before surgery, they could hear me heading their way with my walker or my noisey cane!  Now I am STEALTH MOM.

    All good.  Hugs to you

Hi Caroline pre op I had terrible pain in my back and both legs, that I couldn't stand, walk etc. Getting up and down was excruciating. Post op 14 weeks, I have no pain in legs though I have got pain in my back, though I know I have arthritis in my lower back and unoperated leg.

I had an MRI scan 2 weeks ago on my unoperated leg and pelvis, referred by my surgeon at my 6 week appointment. I go 20 may for my results.
